rolly 10 Posted July 23, 2009 hey guys, for those of you who don't know what Tank Desant is, it's the practice of troops riding on the hull of a tank (if you ever watch footage of Soviet Army in WW2 you'll see this) it would be cool to have the option to have a limited transport capacity ontop of a tank. this idea came to me while I was playing Dogs of war, I had a T72 tank and 5 infantry, as this took me upto my max for my squad, I couldn't get an APC/Truck for the 5 man unit, thought it would be cool to be able to have them ride the tank so it didnt take them forever to get between two points :bounce3: anyone else think this would be cool? Alex72 1 Posted July 23, 2009 Its doable. Already been done as well. There are scripts wich uses attachto i think wich can place units on vehicles.
Murklor 10 Posted July 23, 2009 Unlike in WW2, we now have true troop carriers, AKA APCs... No need to ride on tanks in the middle of a combat zone since its dangerous.
7 0 Posted July 24, 2009 Unlike in WW2, we now have true troop carriers, AKA APCs... No need to ride on tanks in the middle of a combat zone since its dangerous. They had APCs in WW2 as well.
frederf 0 Posted July 24, 2009 The M1 Abrams isn't exactly the kind of tank you'd want to ride. It's very hot and very noisy.
soul_assassin 1750 Posted July 24, 2009 here not using the attachTo commans but standard cargo places on the armour with custom animations. The places should only be available to sit on if the gunner is turned out otherwise the gun barrel will go through the proxies etc. WIP
Jimbo762.au 0 Posted July 24, 2009 No need to ride on tanks in the middle of a combat zone since its dangerous. .50cal rounds won't do much if anything to a tank however they will tear anyone sitting on the out side to shreds. Tanks and APCs draw fire, sitting on one will never end well for you. Plus most of them are loud noisy and hot from the outside.
rolly 10 Posted July 24, 2009 (edited) Soul assassin, thats looks exactly like what I'm looking for, now I'm not a modder, but where can I get hold of a mod that would let me do something like that, and would it allow me to do so in the campign? @ Murklor the development of APCs and IFVs havn't stopped this practice, if you check the Wikipedia article on the subject it explains it has been used in Vietnam (atop APCs usually) and more recently in the Chechen war by Russian troops :D allthough to clarify this is usually done on the way to battle, not actually in battle (which is what I wanted to do anyways :D) @ Jimbo your right about tanks drawing fire, thats why it is a frowned upon practice, allthough it is something that is used to get troops to the battle rather then carry them into/through it, I just thought it would be a nice authentic possibility to save having to use up squad cap on APCs when you have all that room on a tank to sit on :-D Edited July 24, 2009 by rolly Jimbo posting 1 min b4 I finished typing, lol
arma2disapointed 10 Posted July 24, 2009 Couple of tanks in the game you could easely shoot everyone sitting on them, but i dont think you would in reality, if you where not a kamikaze.
frederf 0 Posted July 24, 2009 I think you'd use it mostly for transits in excess of 10km to avoid long term fatigue by marching. Presumably that's usable in Chernarus but most stuff over 5km most people take a helicopter. Actually scratch that, anything over 500m they take a chopper. rolly 10 Posted July 24, 2009 yeah, thats is ideally what I want it for, at the mo I am in Dogs of war, and there are is some ridiculous travelling to be done, but I don't want to use up 2 spots from my squad on a chopper (Damn them for only letting you have 12 dudes!) but I have 6 infantry and 1 T-72, Tank Desant would be ideal in this situation if the option were open to me
arma2disapointed 10 Posted July 24, 2009 You could have more than 12 "dudes" that´s one of the thing´s what so good about Arma.
rolly 10 Posted July 24, 2009 really? I never got to playing Arma 1 as it won't work on my PC, really have been meaning to install the mod that lets you play the ARMA 1 campign in ARMA
arma2disapointed 10 Posted July 24, 2009 It´s tha same in arma2, use F11 and F12 to flip count. And F1 will be 11, F2 will be 12, F3 will be 13 and so on
rolly 10 Posted July 24, 2009 when I get to 12 members and try to buy more units, it tells me my squad is full? :-S
arma2disapointed 10 Posted July 24, 2009 Maybe it´s just the mission that dont allow more units. Try in the editor and you will see.

bigduksixx 15 Posted July 27, 2009 Unlike in WW2, we now have true troop carriers, AKA APCs... No need to ride on tanks in the middle of a combat zone since its dangerous. Don't see why not. Troops can strap themselves to the AH-64. Heath & Safety haven't got any say over the military.
Vandrel 10 Posted July 27, 2009 You are mistaken, your average Marine does not conduct "strap themselves to the AH-64" which is referred to as Spy Rigging. Spy Rigging is only done by trained Marines, those belonging to MARSOC, Recon, STA and sometimes Fast Company. "Health and safety" does have say so over military, that is the prime concen of military ops and training and which is why only trained Marines will do such operations. Lance Corporal Smuckatelly isn't going to hop on a chopper for Spy Rigging or Fast Roping if he's never done it before and isn't trained to do so. That's how Marines get injured, killed and in trouble. Additionally, Spy Rigging is not done from a Apache as you commented, it's done from the UH1, UH60, CH46 or CH53 but not so much the CH53 since it's so large. soul_assassin 1750 Posted July 27, 2009 (edited) So riding on top of a tank while going to WAR to get shot at is considered dangerous? In Russia we call that an oxymoron thats why we ride on tanks :P Edited July 27, 2009 by Soul_Assassin
Daniel 0 Posted July 27, 2009 (edited) Don't see why not. Troops can strap themselves to the AH-64. Heath & Safety haven't got any say over the military. The pilots that recommended that, though extremely brave and with good intentions, got a bit of a roasting when they got back. They got away with it, but I wouldn't expect to see it repeated in the future. The external carrying capability is designed to carry downed fellow pilots away from a crash site. @Vandrel, I think BigDukSixx may be referring to this incident involving UK Apache pilots and troops: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/6386331.stm Speaking of which, and slightly on topic: Can AH-1Z's carry downed heli crews in a similar fashion? If so, that would be great to have. Edited July 27, 2009 by Daniel

Uranium-235 10 Posted July 28, 2009 Generally the whole 'sitting on tanks' (Why did they need to make a special term for this anyway? :P) thing is done when you're simply moving from place to place. When did ANYONE suggest in this thread that you were going to ride it into battle like an epic mount?

Apocal 10 Posted July 28, 2009 No matter it be into battle or from point A to B in real life you will never see Marines doing that, period.
