subs17 9 Posted July 22, 2009 The best way to control aircraft in Arma is with a decent HOTAS. When I was using an X45 it was the best HOTAS at the time to use with Arma because I could control the helicopter with the joystick, collective with the throttle and yaw with the rocker switch. You can setup any key configuartion or joystick axis in the controls menu but it does not have multicontroller support so only one Hotas is supported. Evil_Echo 11 Posted July 23, 2009 Some controllers let you merge multiple joysticks and rudder pedals into a larger virtual controller that ArmA can see. Very handy. Like most aspects of ArmA - flying is a skill you just don't start out with as an expert. ArmA is not some nerfed gun-n-run game, so don't expect choppers to be very forgiving of mistakes. One essential task to do is configure your flight controls properly. You can either set up the controls for classic pitch/roll/yaw or use a simplified ( ? ) turn mode that auto-coordinates for you. Don't enable both modes or you'll go insane fighting the controls. I prefer to disable the mouse alternative to the flight controls, leaving that for other actions and using either joystick or keyboard for flight operations. Do go through the training missions for choppers. And look at the armory missions for helos as well. They provide reasonably safe ways to get your core skills down and controller configured the way you like. Practice slow and simple moves and then worry about speed and weapons later. With a little work it you'll get better. I put together a training mission, Rahmadi Airshow, for training on various aircraft as well as having more than a bit of friendly intra-clan competition. Everyone in our team enjoys the mission and we've all gotten much better as pilots. Even a novice in the ArmA mission editor can make a simple single-player mission to train on with little effort. Concider doing that too.

If you had played Operation Flashpoint and Arma you wouldn't complain about the controls. Practice.
haroon 10 Posted July 26, 2009 You should use the first person view/cockpit view while flying helicopters because this is more realistic and make you concentrate on the flying thing,it also prevent the helicopter swinging from side to side (i think one of the patches of ArmA fixed it,as i have no patches installed!) But landing in first person view is almost impossible or is too difficult,so you should enable third person mode while landing ,putting Auto-hover on and landing makes it easy. Most planes in ArmA just flies around and crashed when Landing AutoPilot is on,again this may be due to patch problems... Anyway,i can fly a helicopter easily without having any patch installed!(i am not tellling you to uninstall the patch,if you done it will be worse) Practice make perfect
Fumbles -SW- 10 Posted July 26, 2009 Get yourself a makeshift joystick preferably with throttle and rudder control (im sure you can find a cheap one to get you by!). What I did to teach myself was just open up the editor and place a lone plane or helicopter and then just mess about and practice landing in different locations and terrains. Then step yourself up a bit by adding enemy and perhaps evacing some ai soldiers from a hot LZ. Remember practice makes perfect and dont attempt to fly online until you're certain you can - there is no better way make enemies than crashing a heli full of players into the trees =D Good luck mate
