I just picked up this game because I'd heard good things. Is there any requirement to have played the originals story wise? Will you appreciate it more that way?

No, the story is completely independent. You have some "easter eggs" referencing previous games (Ads, location names...) but that's it.

Though it helps to know the series as the manual isn't as detailled as it should and the interface does hide a few things from you if you don't know they're here.

I would advise to read Mr Murray Editing Bible for Arma 1 if you want to enter advanced mission editing.

I just want to echo what others have said. You dont have to play ARMA1 to enjoy ARMA2. But you could buy it, if you want to... as a collector item... just for the sake of that 'complete' feeling.
