Lower res textures at chernarus than utes

i am usually really disgusted at the low textures in chernarus. looking at the distance is completely immersion killer. the textures without grass look horrible and very artificial. they are smooth and plastic looking. however looking at textures in utes seems like they are far better.

check out the utes textures -

if u look at the farthest textures, not the ones close and covered with grass. the ones that are close to the skyline - they have some noise and what looks like bum mapping (not really, i guess):

do u guys think that the difference is the overlay of some extra textures that exist in utes and doesnt in chernarus?

if this is the case maybe it's fixable via a mod or an official BIS patch?

or maybe it's just the textures at chernarus that are crap due to a larger scale island?....

There is an addon to change the textures in chernarus already. Check the addon thread more often, or for easier watching addon and other ARMA related news check armaholic.com on a daily basis and you wont miss things. Texture addon have been here for some time now.

PS. Images posted on this forum cannot be over 100kb. Against the rules. You will get bitten cause of this. Read the rules too before you get too hammered by the mods. ;)

That said, you need to measure at the same distance. Utes looks way closer.

like the game is loading the wrong textures?

But the textures had those big blobs in ArmA1 too didnt they? Pretty sure i remember thinking about it back then as well as now.

The addon made it look good though.

PS. Where did Kju say its your fault? I dont get it. He said look from the same distances. And he said maybe BIS didnt get the correct textures in...

oh. i didnt think he said it was my fault but my END. meaning - in MY game and in other's game it looks better.

howver the mod DOES make it look better. not much much better but definately better.

p.s. - do u think the mod causes slowdowns or lower FPS? maybe by loading bigger textures it chugs a bit more?....

I don't think the modded textures are larger, they are just prettier. So, it shouldn't have any performance impact.

It is an interesting theory that Chernarus maybe uses the wrong mid detail textures, or maybe is missing those altogether. Any experienced modder could probably have a look and compare the textures between Utes and Chernarus.

well there must be a way to open them in PS. otherwise how could there be a mod with better textures than?

I believe Kegetys did a quick update of his .paa plugin to support the new LZO compression on Arma2 .paa files...

(decompress only, since arma 2 will read uncompressed ones)...

Haven't tried it yet, but you can find details here

what textures do u like?

cuz this thread is about the textures in the background. above 100 or 200 meters. there it becomes so horrible. and not to mention that once the grass is no longer drawn u can see even the most guillied up sniper sticking out like a zit on a model. camoflage goes out the window when u look at a target over 100 meters in ARMA2.

the only game that had good vegetation over long distances was FC2. the only one....

perhaps crysis, but crysis didnt stream it's world....
