Well, he is right you know. Atleast here in Sweden you cannot get sentenced on a confession alone. Proof is still needed. Most of the time the guy confessing can produce that proof though, if he truly did it. But the fact remains, a confession is not enough for a verdict.<span id='postcolor'>

Sorry if this is a little off the ranting going on, but I've noticed now in a few threads Americans saying "you don't live here, so you don't know what it's means to be an American!!!", or something to that effect.

My question is:

What inherent traits, and ideals uniquely define American?

What makes you inherently American?

NOTE: This is not a flame, just some questions? If it's possible that noone in the world can understand what it means to be American, then there must be something or other that uniquely defines "American", although the only trait I've personally been able to find is being a citizen of a piece of real estate."

A little background: I lived in the US for several years, and have traveled extensively in the continental US. I have been to 42 of the 50 states, including Alaska, and make it a point to try to get to know the people in the places I travel to. The majority of Americans I have met on my travels were very nice, hospitable people, but not any different from Canadians as far as I can tell!

Someone ask what's soo great about america earlier in the post soo... We let europe say what ever opinion they want,even though we could probably shut them up,if they really wanted to.You can disagree with america.Any american can disagree with america.We haven't bomb a country that like us .They do try peace first then war second.We could probably take bunch of countries if we wanted too.America would be first person to step on another planet,unless we let some european,russian,other on the space ship with us,because we are friendly like that.We pick up all the cost at nasa,but the world wants a free ride on a ship.Plus alot more great things about america,but one big great thing about america would be ,if ssomeone ever attacked Europe like they attack america.America would fight along side of you,and probably take lead.Soo you can say whatever you want about america,disagree with america all you like,but in the end when you need america they will be there. You can add more too.

Well lemme ask this....are you asking because Europeans in general have or don't feel some "nationalistic identity"? Do Germans feel or think something that makes them Germans and not Europeans or Dutch or what have you?

One thing I can think of that sets us apart, and this can be taken both in a good and a bad way. For the most part America is strongly isolationist and this is born from the feeling that we don't "need the rest of the world." This can be traced all the way to the Revolution, and may have something to do with a feeling of being "misfits" on theworld stage at the time. As I said....this can both be a good and a bad thing (though I imagine most would view it simply as bad all the time).

I guess you could call it a strong independance streak.

Actually, I find that there's strong nationalistic feeling from citizens of every country. I've yet to find a country that doesn't have it's supporter (from rabid to just proud).

Where my question comes from is this. Canada as a country sits, as you well know, just to the North of the US. We are continually bombarded with American news, TV shows, advertising, etc..(I'll leave it to someone else to decide if this is "good" or "bad"). We are also continually compared to Americans by everyone except ourselves, and Americans! Due to this, many Canadians grow up struggling with this idea of a "Canadian Identity". Does it exist, what is. How are we unique? etc...

Now, in my travels throughout North America, I've yet to find one single trait that I could peg down as "American", or "Canadian". Like Canadians, American lifestyles differ dramatically from one part of the country to the next i.e. Many people in Maine are more similar to Nova Scotians, and New Brunswickers, than to New Yorker's or Virginians.

The isolationism of the US is an interesting angle, but so is China, and so was fuedal Japan. There are several smaller Islamic nations that are also very isolationist (some more so) than the US, so that doesn't really work out well.

The strong independence streak, I'll have to think on for a while, it's an interesting angle with alot of very cool tangents (it's rise, it's effects on modern American culture, possible repurcussion's on the future)

PS: I'm not slamming, or flaming, but "good' and "bad" are two of the least descriptive words in the English language don't you agree. There's a kind of irrefutable totality about them!

What is america ? america is just a group of people in living in a country,mix colors,mix groups of people.you can be a chinese living in america,your still an american.You can be mexican ,you can be a cannuck ,you can be a european,you can be an african,anything.That's what soo great about america,you go to some other country i bet all you see his bunch of white people,mexican people,asain people,other.But in america,you can see all types of the worlds people,chinese,white,mexican,black,white,green,red,orange,blue,other.That's why america is so great.Each one have their own culture,each one has their own ways.But in the end were all the same.Heck soon all us americans going breed and we going come out as a different color.

It's interesting you brought up the racial question, and I think only a matter of time before somebody did. Agreed that there is a large racial mix in the US, however, there is also a very large racial mix in Canada (If I'm not mistaken we have a higher percentage of non-Caucasians here then in the US). Britain has a very large Indian and Islamic population, from what I've heard, although I'm not sure about other countries! Also, in the US there is still a large amount of racial segregation going on, and it doesn't take much reading to find somebody say "If you don't like how we live then get the f***k out of our country", which isn't exactly them most welcoming attitude to cultural differences.

Please don't think I am slamming you, or the US, cause I'm not, it's just that I don't think that this point is unique to the US, and is becoming less so over time!

Well it's true,go to south florida,lots of spanish speaking people,they think you should change your ways for their ways.which is wrong.Texas has whole town speaking spanish,which is also wrong.This is an english speaking country,i don't speak great english,but damn it you better fucking try speak some english.
