One thing that really bothers me

Recommended Posts

I don't really like the idea of being against Russians, i know the conflict is made up but still seems kind of silly. And no i am not Russian i am from US.

Also i think only reason Russia is on opposite spectrum of the US in the game is because that they are the country that manage to compete with us in the arms race and they have a counterpart for every weapon/vehicle.

I would rather see something where superpowers become allies and fight terrorism that fits modern day setting much more.

6 factions is pretty cool idea i like that!

Agreed! Why carry the cold war spectrum anyways? Its over.. , alot of my clanmates and me agree on this issue, we should of seen russians and americans fighting against terroists. Not another cold war. The Simple fact is alot of developers tend to take the Idea that the easy attractive and money making scenario would be Russia Vs US, now personally i disagree with what plot the developers do, i am somewhat offended because somehow i always see the developers potraying russians as a power hungry nation. That isn't true, now days Russia is different, building a better relationship with US. Everything is about US i swear, because thats where they attract alot of American Gamers.

Hopefully there will be a mod in the future such as a Middle Eastern Conflict mod! or a Chechenya Mod which hopefully i grab on and play. I disagree with the developers story line but what can i do?..nothing.. give it 10 years and we will see what kind of games will come out with their plots. Alot of developers are still on the mind set of the Cold War.. heh...

Counter-terrorism doesn't really fit a WAR simulator.

it's simple; an american-russian cooperation in war isn't happening, and a campaign on the russian side against the US wouldn't sell in the west. what remains is a campaign on the US side against the russians.

personally, i'd prefer to have at least two campaigns. or like World in Conflict Complete Edition, mix US missions and russian missions, have a hero on both sides.

Yea i wouldn't mind that, i know it wouldn't sell in the west, but just in my opinion im against such ideas. I know my opinion won't matter really but it won't stop me enjoying ArmA 2, so ill still play it. If you think about it most people ive talked to even alot of americans are sick of the cold war plot, they want to see a middle eastern conflict.

OFDR has a plot where russia and us are cooperating against the chinese, but that also is somewhat an eye towards the chinese.

I always liked the idea of rainbow six games with their mixed organizations. ArmA 1 had SLA and i didn't mind, RAC and SLA were both fictional nations, same for ArmA 2 Chernarus is a fictional nation, it could of been a nation that US could of fought against... but i guess that would be not a great idea.

I will still be waiting for arma 2 when it releases over here in NZ, i am a bit disappointed about the storyline, and if you think about it quite a few russians ive talked to are upset. Its the fact that we don't hate US or whatever, its the fact that the way developers potray russia and russians in games.. same in WW2 games, the germans are potrayed.. , where have we seen one game where americans are bad? the answer is none..zip..zero?, the reason for that is because the world is americanized , im sorry if i am offending anyone here and my intention is not to, but if you look at how media, gaming, movies etc is running, you will see that everything is targeted on america

But russia & US cooperating against "middle east" is different how?

Since getting the game I've still yet to set up a conflict USMC vs. Russians; it just doesn't feel right, haha, and fighting the guerillas/chedakis feels a lot more like it makes sense in terms of the location/atmosphere. (that and I prefer the feel of the russian gear over the american stuff)

In August 2008, Georgia engaged in an armed conflict with Russia and separatist groups from South Ossetia and Abkhazia. In the aftermath of the conflict Russia recognized the Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states, but almost no country followed suit, and the West insists that they are still part of Georgia.[12] On August 28, 2008, the Parliament of Georgia passed a resolution declaring Abkhazia and South Ossetia "Russian-occupied territories".[13][14]

Because it would be a more targeted on a realistic issue nowday's, War against Terror, Realistically there was no action saw between russia and america during the cold war, maybe a few soviet pilots in the vietnam war. Both Russia and America fought in proxy wars during the cold war. USSR in Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan , US in Vietnam War. Both Countries supplied arms, funds to nations that would fight against their enemy.

Now days if you read articles and such. Since Obama's win, both Russia and US now have been working on a way of cooperating in afghanistan and both nations are willing to improve and stablize their relationship.

i said Middle East Conflict...., it can work and it has before..

Over and over and over and over again recently. The ME is getting like WW2 or 'Nam was a few years back. Every man and his dog were making WW2/'Nam games, well now every man and his dog are making ME games, and frankly its dull.

I like the idea of fighting somewhere no one else has really done before.

That war wasn't something we wanted, we went there for the right reason, to fight back and protect the citizens/civilians who were intentionally targeted, Georgia attacked incident civilians bombing them with artillery and rockets.Georgia wanted to start a new cold war and claim Territory which didnt belong to them, the president "cough" Mikheil Saakashvili thought he could get US to back up Georgia against Russia. He knew georgia would'nt win and solely believed US would help its little ally. When US said no, that was the end for georgia..

Russia did'nt start the war , Georgia did, there are many reasonable factors to consider. The fact is in politics US is always potrayed positively by western media and russia always negatively.. you don't hear the truth until you find about the result..

Why should the game's plot be based on a real conflict? I find a modern day west vs. east fight much more interesting than WW2 and asymmetric hi-tech vs. cavemen settings that already exist by the millions.

And please, no politics or this thread gets closed like the others.

Yes Chenarus is nice, but why aren't Russians supposed to be Peacekeepers there? From reading the description about Russian Armed Forces in the arma2 website that was what was said. But then we see US vs Russia again..hence.. I really like the idea of the civil war, i really do, but you see too much US vs Russia it kinda gets boring and annoying..

A conflict between the US and the Russian was probably chosen because they both have fairly advanced, comparable, weapon systems.

It gives the game balance. Otherwise, if say it was an Afghan campaign, one side would have heavy armour and the other would not.

Just my 2 cents, but it kind of makes sense.

Well Russia do won the media war there, but i have doubt on the facts behind all those things being said on both side.

The first casualty of war is the truth.

Its almost impossible to get a firm grip, on why a conflict started, so close to the event.

Its probably a discussion best left 10 years from now. Probably on a different site.

Ok enough politics, but what i was trying was to express my opinion. Im sure alot of you either would agree or disagree with me. Either you hate the conflict or you like it. But ive had mixed opinions about this, but 50% of the people ive talked to don't like the scenario and the other 50% like it or don't care.

There should of been a similar approach similar to Red Hammer/Resistance in OPFOR , which would be fair my eyes. I know the modding community is strong so we will see some Russian based missions. And hell im not bashing US at all, Im just disappointed on the scenario thats all..

my post is taken directly from wiki >_> forgot to mention it.

And My point wasn't about who started the war or how the media perceives nations. But that the conflict in Arma 2 resembles in some way that conflict.

In other thoughts when I saw the media outburst on the conflict, it made me wanna play arma :)
