draw distance KEYBOARD command

Recommended Posts

I have seen in some games (eg. Combat Arms) that there are keyboard commands for mouse sensitivity increase and decrease (in Combat Arms it is "[" and "]"), so I had an idea! Why not put keyboard commands for ARMA's draw distance, in that way it is possibly to change it much faster than entering options (especially good for multiplayer). I have seen in one of the preview videos that the demonstrator increased the viewdistance when flying F-35, and then decreased in close combat to remove lag (all this by entering options of course). It could also be used to increase when sniping...

So i guess even on "super"computers it will be hard to have a lagless game so viewdistance command is of great use!

Thank god there´s "setviewdistance 2000" for MP maps tounge2.gif

A performance monitor within Arma 2 that automatically adjusts viewdistance and LOD corrseponding to FPS would be a geeky thing but I guess I could also ask my computer to make me a sandwich with the same result as asking BIS about such.

I´d be happy if we get back controls of the visual compartement as we had with OFP launcher where you could finetune it to death. Arma was a bit limited in that aspect imo.

If this was possible I think you would need to be able to limit the viewdistance in the mission or in server settings. People with fast computers would have too much advantage over people with slower computers.

I had a "performance monitor" in my mind too, or an automatic viewdistance according to altitude (in aircraft). But even if it is included sometimes you will have to snipe or use binoculars at big distance, and than performance must be sacrificed.

So how do you solve the good computers vs bad computers problem? Maybe your idea would be good for SP only.

Mission scripts (and addons, ECS have some sort of dynamic viewdistance thingy) can do whatever it wants with viewdistance depending on what the mission designer will allow. Personally I'd like a dialog with mission defaults for values for dismounted, values for in vehicles, and values for when in aircrafts.

For coop, it should be user defineable. For TvT, it should be either locked by server to a specific but reasonable value or a range of values depending on the mission or admin desires.

It's not really too problematic to make this. But I wouldn't want anything hardcoded.

Having buttons for adjusting viewdistance while playing the game seems like an immersion killer to me.

"Hmmm, I can't quite see that tank, let me increase my viewdistance so I can take it out with my Javelin."

I don't like it.

I think there should be an option that you can turn on and off to allow dynamic viewdistance when entering a city. Because, 1, you don't need anymore than 1000 view distance in one, and, 2, it would help with performance. Of course, optional, so the powerful computer don't have to have it on.

Well, lucky you then Maddmatt that have a computer that can handle every situation wink_o.gif For me, I'm forced to adjust the viewdistance depending on the situation. Not an ideal situation I agree, but that's what we have to play with.

I've tried some dynamic viewdistance thingies, but I've been quick to disable them since they won't let me do my job as infantry.

Weather effects should *dictate* how far you can see. View distance should be possible to adjust to get the frames you need. Sometimes I even turn off grass up north in the woods just to be able to play the game in those locations.
