Air defense in ARMA2

Did anyone see any news on what type of air defense we can expect in the game?

In the previous Arma the air defense was an insult to the world's air defense industry smile_o.gif Shilka and Vulcans are the last line of defense, not the main one. Can we expect missile air defense in Arma2? I sure hope so. I understand that it also brings up the issue of flares for air units. The developers have to rig the game engine so that air defense units use radars at long ranges, engage the air threat BEFORE they get close enough to destroy the air defense, and be able to move too. Without these basic principles there is no point of making the air defense units in Arma2. Give the addonmakers an engine that they can use and fill up the holes in the game (no doubt there would be some)

The newest screenshots show an Avenger system. It's basically sidewinder missiles on a HMMWV. I imagine that it may be there to counterbalance the Tunguska AA system on the Russian side.

Both Avenger and Tunguska are still close range AA defense systems and are very good against the choppers. What about some AA against the palnes? What I wish to hear from the Arma2 news is some sort of a serious AA systems like Russian Buk or American Hawk, something at least of a medium range AA defense. Just leaving Tunguska and Avenger in the game seem to be a cheap way to avoid making a "best military simulator". It sure be nice to be treated like grownups by the game developers...

I think those systems would be outside the scope of the game. A couple long range SAM batteries could cover the entire map, and there's no real way for a plane to realistically detect or engage enemy radars when your view distance is likely going to be any where from 1000 to 3000 meters for the typical gamer. It'd be nice to have a sim with Lock-On style air combat interoperating with ground forces at an Arma2 level of detail, but computing technology for the mainstream isn't there yet.

What will work against F-35 Lightning II JSF? High skilled AI pilots? Excellent working AI air defense systems? If my memories right countermeasures for air units (planes, helicopters) are not planned and developed. confused_o.gif

Off course there is no point duplicating the real stats of the modern AA systems in this game (though I admit it would be great), but they can create something in that scale. If the map is 30 km range, make the medium-range AA system cover something like 10 km and the short-range AA 5 km. The planes can attack somewhere in 7-8 km range and the gunships in the 4-5 km range. That would make pilots take evasive manuevers and hide in the low altitude or mountain terain (just like in real life). It is not THAT impossible to include in this game.

There are already AGM-88 HARMs in ArmA1 by addon makers...

So planes have proper weapon against AAs (and there are also JSOWs in addons)

What I want in ArmA2 is ECM/coutermesaure for planes and choppers..
