Terrain.png trouble

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have created a terrain.png and terrain.pbl which work. No problems, I can load them and get them to run in buldozer. The problem I am having is that I went back and added a tremendous amount of detail to the terrain.png file (in Photoshop). I have saved everything exactly the same (4096x4096, 16 bit, Gray scale) but I simply cannot ever get buldozer to finish loading with the new data. It will start but always gets stuck in a loop that draws about 50% of my computer usage. I have spent hours trying to figure out what I changed. I have even gone as far as opening up the .png that works, copy and pasting the new data and resaving it to see if I was screwing something up in that portion. I have checked and rechecked (over and over) the .pbl file and nothing is wrong. I can use the .pbl file if it is directed to the old terrain.png file and it works fine. The only difference between the two .png file I have been able to figure out is the size. The new one is about 4 MB larger than that old one (which was 11 MB).

When I load the old one, it takes about a minute to go from starting buldozer to seeing the terrain map. With the new one, I have let the computer run for 6 hours (!wink_o.gif and it still never finished.

I am truly at my wits end. I have absolutely no idea what could be causing the problem. I even went back and removed a very large section of terrain data to reduce the size of the file, but buldozer still wouldn't load.

Any recommendations, suggestions, comments?

Thanks in advance.

Similar, have you tried re-saving with ImageMagick ... sounds like its not a true greyscale or something anymore.

Has the upper/low range changed too much within the png?

Compare # of colours and Min/Max between each .....

This can also happen if you save the png without flattening the image in PS for some weird reason.

-edit-

You do mean loading Buldozer with the new terrain successfully imported right? If you mean not being able to import on a WIP like ace said, copy all objects (ctrl+a--> ctrl+c), delete, import terrain, then paste absolute (shift+v)

Also, buldozer should not run while importing.

Quote[/b] ]Have you tried opening and saving the png file in Wilbur?

I did not do that yesterday, but I tried it today and it says it had to convert from a 24bit image, which I did not save it as (saved it as a 16bit), so I let it do its thing, saved it again, then the loaded it into Visitor. When I import it, the terrain looks correct, but once again when I start buldozer, it never finishes loading.

I am downloading ImageMagick now to see if that will do it. It is saved as a grayscale image so there is no color data in it at all... but I am not sure this is absolutely true. The range between grays is exactly the same as in the .png that works.

Quote[/b] ]Do you have Objects on your map?

Nope, nothing yet. I haven't even imported the sat map yet.

I did make the PS image in layers and then flattened it to save it. I don't have any objects yet. Buldozer is not running until it is imported into visitor.

I appreciate all your comments. I have no fraking idea why it still is not working.

What's the cell size?

I can recall some problems with 4096x4096 sized height maps.

It is 4096 but so is the .png version that works.

Well, I did absolutely nothing different and the problem has gone away. I will chalk that one up to space monkeys trying to ruin my life.
