Guest Posted November 4, 2007 I cant seem to find any info on the 8400 512 card on the forums, just the older 256.. Anyhow this is CRAZY lol I had a GeForce 6800 512 Mb card, and was getting (after optimizations) up to 40 fps with alot going on in the world (near and far away) Now I upgrade to a 8400 512, omg, man, the frikkin Fps is crap.. This is a card in the latest "8" series, newest technology, etc. Ive made sure to update direct X to 9.0c and my drivers to the latest as well to support 9.0c, changed my settings IG to what I had before, im getting frikkin 5 - 20 fps with NOTHING going on in the game world, just my unit in the field alone... Erm, please, anyone have any saving grace knowledge here or experience with this particular GeForce card, this is a complete disaster ....
NeMeSiS 11 Posted November 4, 2007 The 8400 is a very low end budget card, im not suprised that its slower then your old card.
Guest Posted November 4, 2007 Ya, what happened was my old card apparently died, thinking this was a better card (8 series) I got this for very cheap, you are right, well at least I didnt waste too much on it - my system was dead so I needed something fast, I can see im going to need to get a better card .. Thanks for the response, sometimes I learn the hard way I guess.

Beagle 684 Posted November 5, 2007 You should have considered a now cheap 7900 GS that performs much better.
Dwarden 1125 Posted November 5, 2007 more like 8800GT ... cheap and fast enough for anything today (except UWHD)...
Beagle 684 Posted November 6, 2007 more like 8800GT ... cheap and fast enough for anything today (except UWHD)... ...if you have no problems with the fact that the 8xxx series ist not backward compatibel with lots of older games... and that Win XP doen't support DX10. Maddmatt 1 Posted November 6, 2007 i imagine u having troubles only running something like leisure suit larry 1, but thats not the cards fault It is actually. The 8800 series cards cut support for older games. 16-bit graphics and lower no longer work. So old games can't run. I could be wrong somewhere. Just basing it off of what I've been told. You may not care (and I don't care much either), but some people like to play old games once in a while.
Guest Posted November 6, 2007 Thanks for the VERY helpfull stuff here everyone, - looks like I can return my current 'bad' choice, and indeed im looking at the geForce 8800 GT, its more than what I wanted to spend, but it seems lotsa people are raving about it - in fact its the only card at bestBuy.com that actually *has* ratings from buyers, and those people are like flipping out as to how impressed they are by it. A friend of mine showed me a 8600 BFG replica (not actually nvidia) that is only 180.00 bucks, but what the heck, I should just go with the 8800 gt, not have to worry about upgrade for long time. Hey, I did notice mention of these cards using direct x 10 (vista) Im assuming from whats been said regarding that these cards run fine on 9.0 (win xp)? Anyhow, hey, I am sorry for the lone ranger post on this issue, but anyhow maybe it will help someone else too - recommendation to anyone - if it says '8400' stay far aaaawwwwaaayyyy from it, heck id absolutely reccomend my good ol (now dead) 6800 256 sli, that card, for being old as it is and 256 kicks the 8400's 512 mb's butt, ran Arma dang good for the card, and cost is about the same too lol
alext223 0 Posted November 7, 2007 Oh well, you live and learn. Bought a 8600gts 512 a few months ago for $320 AUD, the cheapest 8800 I could find was $250 more, out of my reach. Now a few months down the track, I can find a 8800 GTS 320 for the SAME PRICE! Bugger.... But to Special Ed, look at the bright side, least you have a card that will work well for a HTPC.
