hailstorm 4 Posted July 8, 2007 I don't get it. on Sahrani there are three Grass/Dirt Airstrips, and i know they are definate airstrips as they all have White airstrip markers at the corners. so why is it that they all act like i'm rolling over a dry riverbed when i move any wheeled vehicle over them? for cars, it's bad. for planes, it's infinately worse. try taking off with a camel or A-10 (both of which were designed to operate from non-tarmac runways), and you get what appears to be the bumpiest ride known to man (as well as the associated speed resistance). coming from a RL piloting experience, i've landed and took off from lots of dirt and grass airstrips, and it's not a rough ride (maybe a slight shaking in the seat of the pants, but that's about it), far from the visibly shaking airframe you get when you taxi in ArmA. in reality, designated strips are usually pretty smooth, and jets such as A-10's and Harriers shouldn't have a problem operating from them. personally, i think that the stips should have similar surface properties as roads do - they should have less resistance to speed, and be smooth enough to avoid visible rocking of airframes/car bodies. frederf 0 Posted July 8, 2007 If you actually look at the terrain say at the Pita airstrip it's not even (the terrain mesh). I've actually landed and taken off a fixed wing aircraft from a grass strip before. It was the SMOOTHEST runway I've ever been on, cushy. 3O8 if you're curious
max power 21 Posted July 8, 2007 in reality, designated strips are usually pretty smooth, and jets such as A-10's and Harriers shouldn't have a problem operating from them. Unless the landing gear of those very heavy warplanes were sinking into the soft ground. Whether or not those aircraft can use those unprepared airstrips depends on a lot of things. One of the grass strips I've seen had huge grooves cut into them from heavy aircraft taxiing over soft ground. To be fair, this strip in particular was a WWII era strip and didn't really look like it was maintained very well. I get the impression that it was still used by some, sometimes tho. I think that these are the kind of conditions you could expect on rahmdi, though. Soft, sandy ground, abandoned, unkempt, etc.
celery 8 Posted July 8, 2007 Camels are easy to take off in by steering down so that it will pick up speed better.
jasono 0 Posted July 8, 2007 Indeed, the airstrips are poor to be used to take-off and land without having some unrealistic movement on them. Maybe some sort of layer could be implemented underneath the grass to act as a solid ground. At least that would solve the problem ?
Daniel 0 Posted July 8, 2007 Nah, I'd have thought it's just a case of changing a vlue in the texture tile? Or something as simple as that.

But that tile is used elsewhere.. but I suppose you could land elsewhere if the terrain is flat enough and clear.. so I guess your idea would be better
UNN 0 Posted July 8, 2007 As a quick fix you can create invisible roadways over the runway. Thats how they do the main Airport. If you set Show ID's in the mission editor and zoom in on the Pariso runway, you can see all the IDs'.
