Multiplayer non-lag skipping

Recommended Posts

Hi guys I got on the forums here to see if anyone can help me out with an issue My specs are 7800 GS Nvidia 2 gig 333 ram and a Pent 2.8 socket 478 cpu.... (Not a horrible PC or the best)

I run arma fine in single player all the characters are running around etc and no one skips around when sniping.. I could follow an AI character and pick him off while running..

The problem comes in when I play online. I get to a good sniping spot zoom in on a character and watch them skip around all over the place. As they will be running one direction and then cut to the right and for some reason I still see them running straight for a second and then the jump to where they actually are the next second and the cycle repeates. I have looked around to see if its the GFX card but others have same specs and are fine.. So then I looked at ports numbers and firewalls and opened Port 2302-2305 up to my pc and turned off all AV and firewalls.. Still no luck sad_o.gif

My ingame settings are normal right now but to see if it was to much I put them down to very low and still had the same issue.

Any help would be great as I love the multiplayer side of the game

My Ping in game is uss around 60-80

It's called lag.  Not only your ping, but others pings too will cause them to jump on your screen.  If someone else has, say, a 100 msec ping, and you have 80, then that's .18 sec lag, plus factor in processing time for all the other clients and you get at least a quarter-second difference between your relative positions.  The other guy will see the same effec t on you.  Hence the jumping around.  No real fix for this, unless you get a faster ping yourself (talk to your ISP) or you join servers that are local to you, where most players are local too.

ArmA seems better at dealing with this than many other programs, even those using similar synchronising strategies, and some programs do use a 'freeze screen' method of ensuring folks see more accurately - but that can get HORRIBLE when someone is a higher ping on the same server.

(I used to be that higher ping guy, on 56k to the States...)

I suppose it's possible to artificially accelerate the movement that you see between reported positions, smoothing the jumping in effect, but that could easily get messy in the coding. Perhaps that's a suggestion for next-gen game?

Or maybe that would be just as horrible, seeing foks blur between 2 positions instead of just teleporting may not be any better really.

It's the players skipping around that have the high ping.

Could try to find a server where everyone has good ping

The only reason I dont think it is ping is because the farther away that I see them the worse it gets lol. I have also checked the pings when looking at a player and they are low 50's and still doing it..

If im running with the AK in hand and a guy is next to me he never seems to skip.. but if I look at that same person running from a sniper scope or binocs they seems to be running and disapear only to reaper a distance infront of them..

I got a new sound card Audigy Value 2 to relieve some of my ram but I have 2 gigs so that should be the issue.. as the game only take 768.

Im at a lose as to what is causing this issue. My next step tonight will be to upload the 1.07 patch and see if for some miracle it fixes it. If you guys have any more tricks let me know. banghead.gif

h and by the way none of this occurs in Single player.. It does do it in even a 4 person coop server though...So i have no idea what it is.

You could perhaps contact the server admin and ask them to have a play around with some of the performance parameters in the username.ArmAProfile.cfg file.

MinErrorToSend=x.xx (where x.xx=0.01 default and 0.009-0.001 - to reduce skipping [lag] when using zoom with scopes)

I'm sure some of the other more experienced server admins here could indicate what the optimum setting could be.

Hope this helps

Update on my issue... I tried using 1.07 that didnt help at all...:( Also picked up the sound card.. didnt change anything..

Does anyone else seem to have this issue at all?? My cpu is 2.8 and that runs single player fine.. is it just to much strain on the MP part of the game?? help.gif

Issue for those of you who dont know already.. Characters seem to skip the farther away I see them in MP...

Are you talking about real long distance snipes?

The farther the character is from you, the choppier they're going to be. It's that war for performance reasons. They use less animation frames, and less motion data for objects far away. You can even see tanks/bmps to the hippity-hop as well, at long distances.

I mean like at 500 meters.. they skip about 10 meters every other second.. especially if they change directions..

That and it seems like when ever i bring up my issue in game no one else is getting it.

Hm...do you play any other Online games and suffer lags there too?

I heared such things quite often back in my UT time. People with good pings had major lags and warping Characters and stuff...

To say it short: I bet its your connection.

Thanks I overclocked my GFX card to see if maybe the issue was with it and its not.. I can run everything on very high now and still see the "lag" Thank for the info about the distance lag it helped alot.. I just need to find a server where it has been set so that people can snipe at distance... Gues there is nothing I can do sad_o.gif

Can we get any more infos on how server admins are solving this?

MCPXXL mentioned a formula, anything more specific?
