Dwarden 1125 Posted May 10, 2007 one of my main problems with ArmA visuals is quality detail of medium and distant ground texture ... for some reason it looks nearly flat, lot of single color and feels totally unnatural ... i wonder why ArmA dont use something like one Oblivion patch added for distant land ... Quote[/b] ]quality improvement in the patch seems to add a speckle pattern on top of the rendered LOD textures , \Oblivion\Data\Textures\Effects\TerrainNoise.dds see examples Default Oblivion DL noise Easily modded DL noise to softer visual allows modders to mess with ... --- to get similar result i was just messing with Forced MipMap Filter in ATI drivers normal ArmA screenshot default ArmA with HQ maxed Anisotropic Filtering - VH settings then FM on First Try - result was too grainy and lot of flickering while moving (shimmer) then i messed with negative LOD and set all back, to my suprise result was something "BETWEEN" normal and Forced MipMaps w/o any shimmer Good Result - feeling of medium-distant land look while moving/looking around was WAY better (natural) than vanilla ArmA... i was really suprised but it's pain to replicate and keep this result each time You restart ArmA... that's why i hope for simple similar solution like was used in Oblivion ... jerryhopper 286 Posted May 10, 2007 ok - i must admit, it looks better indeed. But does it affect framerate ( like u said? ) and another question, isnt this 'moddable'? myself, i hate the flattened out greenish when you look far. this grainy stuff really removes that low detail texture 'look' quite a bit! nice find btw! Dwarden 1125 Posted May 10, 2007 there was only small perf drop in that nicer mode still i would prefer official solution la Oblivion (or better :...
Sosna 0 Posted May 11, 2007 I agree, the terrain textures could really be improved. The biggest problem I've noticed is that the ground textures don't look nowhere near as rough as the grass, so the grass doesn't blend at all. It really makes it look like it is sprouting up as you walk along.

sparks50 0 Posted March 21, 2009 Gravedigging isn't allowed BTW, perhaps we have to start a new topic with same title linking to this one? I find this to be a interesting issue, and perhaps the weakest link in the graphics. Its just as bad in Arma 2 as well. http://www.armaholic.com/pfs.php?m=view&v=4-steam_arma2_2.png I don't care too much about graphics, but this is definitely THE graphical thing to fix. CameronMcDonald 146 Posted March 21, 2009 Interesting. Hopefully when I upgrade later this year my likely-to-be-nuclear-powered system will be able to run a huge negative LOD level... Allah willing. I'm sorry I didn't see this thread when it was in its youth... good find, Dwarden.
