New Mission Editing Tutorial

Recommended Posts

Ok, I have made a basic editing tutorial for those who are completely new to the process and just want a place to start. I uploaded it to armaholic here:

My editing tutorial

I would love to get some feedback on it. After more than a week of work, I am sure I missed something. Any suggestions or fine-tunings would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

Rick

Nice idea to ask for every body's participation, that was my first feeling smile_o.gif .

After the first read of your tutorial, I feel a big lack of pictures and screenshots wow_o.gif . Ok, there are some but not enough, I think. It would be plaisant to see dialog boxes you mentioned during all the tutorial with the choices you made (and explained in text).

For example, when you describe the first synchronization between the two WP (chopper and group), there is a lot of text and no screenshot. I must admit that I felt lonely confused_o.gif

Screenshots are really useful for "students" that want to verify and control they are in conformance with the tutorial AND to retrieve quickly the paragraph they want to read again.

Nice job, I saved your tutorial on my hard disk, preciously xmas_o.gif

Go on.

Thanks for the feedback Moktar, I was debating myself the ratio of pictures/text as I was making it. I'll get some feedback for a few more days and then maybe try to update it with some more pictures. Don't forget you can load up the basic version of the mission that I provided to A/B everything while you wait for an update  smile_o.gif

Thanks Man,

Rick

Another feedback :

Instead of commenting (legend below the screenshots), it will be readable having some arrows to show and point what you are describing (use paint/toshop/whatever... to draw colored arrows on images).

In my opinion, each screenshot should show

<ul>

- The current state of a map part with instruction (in case you ask for scrolling to the EST, it would be nice to have the screenshot of the scene you have asked to retrieve

- The state of a map part AFTER entering a new WP/Trigger/Synchronization/etc ...

Wow, thanks for all the ideas, I'm not sure if I can fit that many screenshots in, it would be a picture book smile_o.gif

Anybody know where the best site to try to get this hosted would be to help out the most people?

Thanks for the feedback so far!

Rick

Another idea which I find very useful and requires little documentation is the ability to use Windows Media Encoder. It is basically a recorder which you start as a task on your pc and when you are in the editor clicking and defining stuff, the encoder records is in .wmv format.

You could have a Contents section with basic beginner screenshots, then in each content they can click the link and it will take them to your audio & video presentation.

I use it at work when I want to have a simple "how to" for my staff. They can see all my moves on screen.

You can use Video as well as audio to make your tutorial. I believe the download link for this useful tool is at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows....lt.mspx

It should only take you a few minutes to figure out how to use it. I had no idea what this was or how to use it, but once downloaded I figured it out in minutes. Once you setup the source information for audio, you should be able to set the output details (such as file for the pc (not streaming). Only concern may be filesize for the video, but I am sure someone wouldn't mind hosting.

I saw a tutorial on modding once setup as a class using this tool. Real nice. The fact that you can use audio is key because you can mention ideas even if you are not implementing them in your examples.

Tom- I was thinking about that but I was wondering if anybody would be able to see anything at the resolution I would have to se it at to get someone to host it smile_o.gif

G-Shock- Thanks, man. The tutorial is basically the bleeding edge of my editing knowledge, so hopefully someone will pick up the ball and write a chapter 2! I'm interested to see what that German tutorial looks like when translated.

I understand - I have never had an issue with the resolution before, but that's not to say you wouldn't have a problem. Keep up the good work. It takes time, energy, and effort, but never goes un-noticed.
