Hi JasonH

You are right you are not the only one with this problem.

You probably do not know but your mobo has an onboard sound card it is an AC97; I just checked. Even though you are using an X-fi soundcard plug in sound card, the AC97 is probably still running.

It is the probable culprit. Realtek updated their drivers to fix this known problem, but many people do not update mobo drivers or onboard sound drivers.

Solution 1

Make sure you have these latest drivers for your AC97; as this is one of the most common problems people have had that causes lockups, CTD and blue screen.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/

Solution 2

Also download and install the latest OpenAL installer for windows

http://www.openal.org/downloads.html

Solution 3

There is additional info here on other ways to prevent the AC97 onboard sound problems.

http://community.bistudio.com/wiki/ArmA:_Troubleshooting

Solution 4

If these three solutions do not work then in order to help you we need a few more details.

You do need to fill in ALL these details so we can help you, we especially need driver versions; so we can exclude or include them as the cause.

CPU

Graphics card (make, model, driver version, on-board ram)

Sound card  (make, model and driver version)

RAM (how much you have)

ArmA version (which language, which patch)

DirectX version (all should be using 9.0c anyway)

Mother board (make, model, driver version, on-board sound card)

Please look in:

C:\Documents and Settings\...Your user Account...\Local Settings\Application Data\ArmA\

Open Your arma.RPT file in notepad and tell us what the bottom entry says. It will begin something like this.

<table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">=====================================================================

It installed HD Audio from Realtek so that worked but the new nvidia drivers (beta) are causing system wide instability resulting in Blue screens of death and auto reboots.

And haveing to disable my X-fi and switch my jacks everytime I play this game is unexceptable to me. All this work it shows me this shit ain't ready and I hope this isn't in the final north american version or else it's a return to EBgames for me sad_o.gif

Hi JasonH

2 steps forward one step back

You have tracked down the problem. The original culprit was your on board sound as I suggested. Horuss was correct about it being HD rather than the original AC97; my bad second time that one caught me.

goodnight.gif

Anyway back on the horse and to solutions.

I would suggest the best option for sound is the one you have stated you want which is to get you XIFI up and running again.

1) Disable On Board sound in the BIOS

To do this we need to disable the on board sound in your BIOS. It is in the Integrated Peripherals section of your BIOS listed as HD Audio. 5th row down in these pics. http://www.nvnews.net/previews/geforce_8800_gtx/page_3.shtml

Dont go poking any thing else while you are in your bios, tempting as it may seem.  wink_o.gif "Ohh what does the big red button do?" says the presidents son visiting the missile silo.

2) Remove old Drivers

Also remove the old AC97 and HD sound drivers. There are several way to do this.

Here are a couple of ways you could do it.

Way 1

Follow these steps to view and remove these unnecessary device drivers:

1) Press [Windows]+[break] to bring up the System Properties dialog box.

2) Select the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button.

3) Click the New button below the System Variables panel.

4) In the New System Variable dialog box, type devmgr_show_nonpresent_devices in the Variable Name text box and 1 in the Variable Value text box.

5) Click OK to return to the System Properties dialog box and then click OK again.

6) Bring up the System Properties dialog box again and select the Hardware tab and click the Device Manager button.

7) In Device Manager, go to View | Show Hidden Devices.

8) Expand the various branches in the device tree and look for the washed out icons, which indicate unused device drivers.

9) To remove an unused device driver, right-click the icon and select Uninstall.

Way 2

3) Time to install updated drivers

Next install the updated XIFI drivers. Get the latest drivers for your sound card from your sound card manufacturers web site.

Kind Regards walker

Hi JasonH

1) I understand you have turned off HD audio in your BIOS is that correct?

2) Is your XIFI sound card now back and working?

3) Your MS error report is usefull but what would also be useful is your ArmA error report.

Please look in:

C:\Documents and Settings\...Your user Account...\Local Settings\Application Data\ArmA\

Open Your arma.RPT file in notepad and tell us what the bottom entry says. It will begin something like this.
