Joystick Problems in 1.40

Recommended Posts

I dont know if anyone else ifs having these problems, but Im having problems using my joystick in OFP after installing 1.40, mostly with the slider throttle. Im using a Logitech Wingman Extreme 3d...

First, I cant get the jets up to full throttle now...The fastest take off speed I can get is 150 m/h, which isnt enough to take off. When I start out in the air, I can barely keep flying straight and level, but if I maneuver at all I eventually crash from losing airspeed and not being able to get it back. To make sure it was the joystick, I disable it and used the keyboard and it flew at normal speed.

Second, using the slider for altitude control in a chopper is STILL messed up. This isnt a new bug in 1.40, but it still needs to be fixed. The dead zone for the slider is virtually non-existant and u change altitude WAY too fast. I can never use my joystick to fly a chopper since its almost impossible to fly straight and level.

Lastly, I can go to an unlimited altitude using the throttle slider for altitude control. Im not sure if this is new in 1.40, but it is the first time Ive noticed it. Im not positively sure just how high you can go but I went over 2500m before I decided to go back down.

These bugs are REALLY annoying since my fav part of OFP is flying. Now I cant fly the jets at ALL since its next to impossible to use the keyboard and now I cant use my joystick. It worked fine with jets in 1.30, but now now....

P.S. I recalibrated my joystick several time.

Plenty ppl having this problem.

Perhaps you should read a little b4 you post.

the throttle problem on joysticks giving unlimited altitude has been around for ages.

I have a MS Sidewinder3d Precision Pro

One problem i really REALLY hate with my J-stick is, to keep flying at the one altitude i have to keep my throttle in the exact center, and that is hard to do.

I just use my Kb for altitude and the stick for shooting and control.

If i even touch my throttle, it takes about 30 seconds to get the throttle right again so im not either losing altidude at a stupid rate or gaining it.

Just for the heck of it, go into your controls setup, go down to the bottom of the list, and click the rudder or the throttle. Then move your joystick throttle slowly through its entire range. I think that there is something wierd going on here, like  a "double binding". Mine shows "stick slider" cutting in and out in a couple of places in the throttle range. Then, the same "stick slider"  shows up under Z axis, showing a conflict with the same binding in rudder.

<Shrugs>

I don't see how the game could make proper use of such overlapping, or intermittent bindings.

I have a precision sidewinder pro and my throttle is buggered anyhow - Slider ceased to work long ago.

Maybe thats why i have yet been able to get a plane airbourne.

Me..Ill stick to helis.

Another thing...my control setup has Air thrust as "Stick slider" and "z-axis"

I cant delete these and configure a key in place of.

Any suggestions?

I have a logictech wingman extreme digital 3d and the throttle works but it sucks with the choppers. The difference between 100% torque and 30% is about 1 milimeter on the throttle.

I have done plenty of reading and I still havent found a solution to this.

Im not too bugged about the Chopper thing, but it really annoys me that I cant fly planes anymore....

That was the point of doing the test in your controls setup. The fact that the throttle "binding" cuts in and out twice within its travel, could mean that as soon as it gets to zero, a little bit farther is all the way to the "maximum" setting again. I think that there is one helicopter where the throttle works smoothly with only one minimum and one maximum throughout the range. The other heli has two "minimums" and two "maximums".

Can anyone else confirm this?

HuFlungDung!!!

Thanks to you I figured it out!  I was messing around with your little test and I got my joystick working properly.

I noticed how you said it would cut out then back in.  I set my throttle all the way to the top, and it was cut out.  Then I slowly moved it down and stopped at the exact point where it cut back in.  Then i saved it and tried flying a jet and it worked perfectly!

Woohoo! I got my OFP wings back! At first I thought I was gonna have to replace my joystick(fairly expensive) cuz a beer got spilled on it last weekend, but now its working fine! Thx again!

That's good news Mr ThunderMakeR. Now, I hope the codemasters people notice this and can fix us up.

After re-reading what you did, can we give everyone a "formula" for what to do? On my Saitek USB gold, I find that midway through its range is where the binding cuts out. Is it important then to save "throttle" at the approximate midway point in its travel, whenever the binding changes state?

Hmm, im not positively sure if this would work for others, but Id suggest saving the controls with ur joystick's throttle at the highest point at which it shows "stick slider-1" under the throttle control.

I posted this in another area, but I'll repeat it here since there are other "joystick issues" listed here:

1) Throttle axis is still incorrect for planes (correct for helicopters though). We need a "reverse axis" option in the setup for when we fly planes verus helicopters.

2) Sensitivities. Throttle is too sensitive on certain joysticks (like mine). Just like the mouse setup currently has a sensitivity slider, the throttle and/or joystick needs a sensitivity slider.

3) Auto-Centering Joysticks. The mouse is still smoother for flying than the joystick. This is because a joystick auto-centers (the joystick springs bounce the joystick back to the center when you let go of the joystick, or when you decrease pressure in a certain direction). AND when the joystick auto-centers, it pulls the nose of the helo back to level flight. But the mouse does not automatically slide back to a "center" position, because a mouse obviously has NO center position, and no springs to pop it back to the center of your desk. Therefore, the mouse can help maintain a slight nose down position, which keeps the chopper moving forward easier than the joystick. Thus, the joystick settings need some way to decrease or remove the affect of auto-centering.

Same with my Sidewinder 3d precision pro

I think B.I.S should have it realistic.... For choppers...Pull the throttle back for power (take the slider down)

And for planes, Push the throttle foward (push the slider upwards)

This is more realistic

Instead of the s**t it is now.

Center to hover, slider down to go down, and slider up to go up....

ugh, wish BIS used realistic air craft controls instead of the "foward" "fast" exct.... Flying with a KB cuz the throttle is f**ked sucks!

Not relating to OFP, do you have problems with the z-axis (yaw) on ur wingman?? Ever since I bought mine I have had a problem with it.  When I twist right only a little bit, it reads it as twisting left for some reason.
