odjob 0 Posted January 22, 2007 I have a creative x-fi extreme music card and Arma german morphicon version (patched 1.02). I got Arma the first week after release and its been running great (with only a couple of crashes in MP) until a couple of days ago when it would ctd as soon as the menus apear, every single time i tried to start it would ctd. After many hours of checking i found it to be the "mode switcher" thingy that comes with x-fi. When switched to "Entertainment mode" Arma will ctd everytime, when switched to "Game mode" no ctd. Might have something to do with eax. Might help someone i hope. /P
awins1 0 Posted January 22, 2007 When you enable Entertainment mode, this setting turns off hardware accelaration for the X-Fi. This happens in many games, not only ArmA. For games, you always want it to run in Game Mode.
Phantom Mark 0 Posted January 23, 2007 A workaround may be to preset the mode into GAMES mode permenantly, I have this card set like this and have never had a problem personaly........good luck. Mark.
suma 8 Posted January 23, 2007 I confirm this to be a bug in Armed Assault. It will be fixed in the next patch. Meanwhile, you should be able to use one of following possible workarounds: - run in Game mode once and disable HW acceleration in the game audio options or - run in Game mode once and disable EAX in the game audio options or - use Game mode permanently
Millenium7 0 Posted January 23, 2007 A workaround may be to preset the mode into GAMES mode permenantly, I have this card set like this and have never had a problem personaly........good luck.Mark. If you have a low-medium sound system you probably won't notice any difference in sound quality in which case you can leave it in game mode. If you have a high end system then entertainment mode provides better audio quality and clarity even when the settings are the same. So test it for yourself before you go missing out on any potential gains However EAX effects (and some others) take a hit in entertainment mode so when a game supports it it will sound and play better in game mode

I must say that BIS support is superb, most other companies would have left me wondering on issues like this. /P
Phantom Mark 0 Posted January 23, 2007 @ Millenium7 Thx, All I do is gameplay - as I am games developer myself
Maddmatt 1 Posted January 23, 2007 There is a program around that lets you apply application profiles for the sound card modes, so you can have game mode set automatically when you launch ArmA - the it goes back to entertainment mode when you exit. Look on the soundblaster forums if you want it. I don't mind this bug, saves me from accidentally playing in entertainment mode .
nubbin77 0 Posted January 23, 2007 So very weird that I don't have this issue. I wonder if it is because I have an older set of drivers from creative for the x-fi. The only sound issue I have right now is that certain sounds override others (like if I reload, that's the only sound played) Usually tank sounds and helicopter sounds are drowned out by gunfire sounds and reload sounds. This was already talked about in another thread though... Still weird that I have no issues with entertainment mode, using ingame hardware, eax on or off in any combination and I get no issue... strange.
Dwarden 1125 Posted April 9, 2007 i can confirm that there are some weird sound issues with EAX or ArmA sound engine in general after some time i start to loose rnd sounds or effects, some began to loop etc. with latest beta patch it happens sometime within minutes after entering MP game i use one of latest X-fi series (low-profile Xtreme Gamer) feature wise like original X-fi just w/o some ports and w/o XRAM using Windows XP SP2 Pro with latest CL drivers (tried both stable and beta) with latest OpenAL

WOW OBLIVION FEAR and ARMA all can have a fit if not in game mode. If you enable 24 bit crystaliser then it has a fit in almost any game if not in GAME mode. Mr_Tea 0 Posted April 9, 2007 What do you think is the GAME MODE for? That has nothing to do with strange behavior, and is no bug or glitch.
Dwarden 1125 Posted April 9, 2007 and where i said i don't use game mode ? i tried ALL 3 X-fi offers You maybe not noticed that ArmA refuse to allow use EAX mode together with HW mode IF you NOT in Game mode (e.g. Entertainment) no game mode no EAX + HW mode ... gotcha ? this is because old ArmA versions were crashing after loading menu w/o game mode ... so in short this sound bug issue was WITH X-FI GAME MODE USED! p.s. i just realized this was different topic than i though i post in (related to other EAX issues with X-fi, yet somehow my search refuse to show it) ... Generally i dont enable Hardware support in most games as i know Creative make even worse drivers than nvidia/ATI combined. Enabling hardware in World OF warcraft was a surefire way to kill the game for quite a few patches. Creative make great soundcard hardware and speakers etc but lousy drivers.
