AKM 0 Posted November 1, 2006 Argun Gorge was pretty intense. The primary failing there was the same with every other Russian unit; bad leadership from the Platoon to Divisional levels. That's been rectified in some units. JdB, thanks for the reference! I'll have to copy that down myself. Re: Western Weapons, Typically they don't use Western weapons, but SpN units know how to use them, just as Western SF know how to use East-Bloc weapons. I've seen some pictures of Russian MVD like OMON and OMSN carrying AI sniper rifles such as L-96A1. I'll see if I can dig that image up sometime.
Shadow NX 1 Posted November 1, 2006 If it helps i heard quite a few western handguns and some submachineguns were ordered, also some precission sniper rifles as thats what the russian units lack. Main weapons will always stay russian but it seems for the second option weapon they think of trying some western stuff.
W0lle 1052 Posted November 2, 2006 Just stumbled accross this. Very nice and detailed explanation. Was looking for that quite a while. Many thanks for the work you put into this
Lt_Phoenix 0 Posted November 6, 2006 I'm interrested to know which units use what vehicles/IFV's/APC's like BTR-80's, BMP's, BMD's, BRDM etc. Do the Naval Infantry use mainly MT-LB, and the VDV use BMD? Would be good to know when making missions
kala 0 Posted November 6, 2006 Well, VDV uses BMDs and mostly the elder ones. I' am not sure about Naval Infantry, back to Soviet times they used mostly BTR-60s.But Russian Naval Infantry is more like dedicated to hovercrafts, they more like storm the beach with big mass of light infantry. Supernova 0 Posted November 6, 2006 thats not true they have recently gotten the BMD4 but in limited quantities. They have more BMD3's than BMD4's.
kala 0 Posted November 6, 2006 A joke or something? If 76th VDV has BMD4's then something is wrong with me.
Supernova 0 Posted November 6, 2006 Im not sure which VDV the BMD4 is in service but it is in service from this year. from shipunov.com (KPS) http://images.google.ca/imgres?....rl=http
kala 0 Posted November 6, 2006 Are u fucking still kiding? Do u think that this thing goes like in game or something? Like u just say that we now have this new stuff in service and everything is now upgraded. Most of the stuff in russian army is old and eaven outdated, they produce like 50 T-90's per year, now think how much they would need to produce this to get all tanks replaced in a year. Russia has tried many times to reform its army, it keeps allways failing I must say.
Ironsight 1 Posted November 6, 2006 A very limited amount of BMD-3's are in service. According to this article some vehicle will enter service at the end of the year. Don't count on it though. Supernova 0 Posted November 6, 2006 I never said russia was fully modernized. Only 20-30% of total tanks in russian inventory are "modern" mainly consisting of T-80's and T-90's. Their economy is improving and their military budget every year is increasing so they can afford to have BMD4's and other great stuff.
kala 0 Posted November 6, 2006 Their sending theyr money to improvise Nukes, most of the army is "starving". I can eaven expect somekind of a new collapse in Russia.
Supernova 0 Posted November 6, 2006 improvise nukes u mean the Topol-M ?
kala 0 Posted November 6, 2006 Yea and their building problably a new ones, they want some shit that could penetrate defenisve rockets and all defences, to make sure they get to their target.
Supernova 0 Posted November 6, 2006 I dont know about the newer versions of the Topol-M all I heard was that they converted it to a SLBM. How effective is the Topol-M at penetrating targets because the Russians claim nothing in the world can intercept it.
AKM 0 Posted November 6, 2006 Shift the discussion of TOPOL-M to a different thread, please. It's a massive subject deserving of its own discussion. Quote[/b] ]I'm interrested to know which units use what vehicles/IFV's/APC's like BTR-80's, BMP's, BMD's, BRDM etc.Do the Naval Infantry use mainly MT-LB, and the VDV use BMD? Would be good to know when making missions The BMD series were originally developed for the VDV, if I recall correctly. They're lightweight, easily air-dropped, well armed, etc. I believe the MORPEH looked at them but opted for BMP series and BTRs. MT-LB seems to be a general-purpose armoured vehicle in use all over the Russian military. While I can't answer your question as specifically as I would like, there is a variant of the BMP-3 called BMP-3F, which is the "Naval Infantry" version of the BMP-3 IFV. As to what changes there are, I have no idea. If I recall correctly, BRDM is a armoured reconnaissance vehicle like Fennek (though not as advanced) or even the old German Luchs. I think BRDM would roughly translate as "Armoured Reconnaissance Machine," and in Russian, "Maschina" means car, if I recall correctly, so there we have it. As to who deploys BRDM and BRDM-2, Army Reconnaissance groups and I've seen some MVD units with them; groups like OMON and the like.
Supernova 0 Posted November 6, 2006 and wasnt it proved that in a bmd a crew could be parachuted down as well in the bmd ?
miss_cleo 0 Posted November 6, 2006 dropping the bmd with the crew inside proved to be a little rough on the crew to be practical.

AKM 0 Posted November 6, 2006 PT-76 may still be in use with some units. For those who don't know, PT-76 is a amphibious light tank, designed by the same fellows who designed the IS-series heavy tank after the end of the Second World War. And parachuting the BMD, pre-crewed, has had mixed results. Mostly, the crew suffer something broken - on two occassions, their spine. On several occassions it worked perfectly. I believe the SOP is to parachute in the BMD, and the crew follow it in their own 'chutes.
