I think 98 came with IE4, which wasn't all that great. Update that to the most recent version, either 5.5 or 6.0. If that doesn't work, use the excellent http://www.mozilla.org The problem isn't going to be the cd drive, if it even is hardware related, it's going to be a problem with the controller for your cd drive and hard drives, which is a pain to replace. Give my suggestion a go, and I reckon you'll be in business.

The problem in more detail is I start internet explorer, I connect to internet, click on URL bar, start typing URL and then the CD drive starts spinning up, and the whole thing freezes until the CD drive has read whatever CD is in the drive. Is there anyone else who has the same thing....? or is it just me and some stupid setting that I am missing somewhere....? It also sometimes does this in 'my computer' when I click on the C drive, which is baffling to say the least.
Placebo 29 Posted January 24, 2002 I take it you've checked for virii/trojans? If you can't solve the problem removing the cd when surfing should stop it from happening
ralphwiggum 6 Posted January 24, 2002 I have IE5.0 on WIN98SE, and have same prob. My speculation is that since IE is a shell program, once in awhile, IE checks/refreshes its drive content. If you take out the CDs from CD-ROM drive, this process is faster, so you won't feel a thing. IE spins(?) your CD to see the content. My speculation is based upon the fact that you can actually look at contents of your PC with IE. Ofcourse, this is why Netscape had better security.
Bassemoluff 0 Posted January 24, 2002 This usually happens if you have set the BIOS to check HD/CDROM drives when they're accessed first, and not during boot time. When you make the first input to the URL field, IE restores the recent URL list from disk, and accesses your HD drive for that purpose, thus having the OS "mounting" your drives. Same goes for me (WinME, now WinXP). Don't worry - it's a nuisance, but nothing more.
