Nightjay0044 1 Posted April 24, 2006 You know I've seen other fan pages or websites in the OFP community and a lot of them look good. I also like the site that I have but personally I feel I need to make it more proffessional. What are some tips and advice do you have that would make it look better when it comes to posting news, images and information on the site that poeple like to view? anyone may post how ever you feel is neccassary..Thanks... HotShot 0 Posted April 24, 2006 I like the design of the website, its nice bright and modern. Not loads of crap about, so easy to read. I think though you should move the newspost to the top of the page (instead of the Welcome bit) so people can see the news as soon as they click on the site rather than having to scroll down. For the posting i always put a border around images. I use a Black size 2 Center stroke on them, but OFP.info seems to have a nice way of adding it through the newspost code, the latter probably being easier and better, but either way just that frame seems to do alot for the image. Make sure you dont write too much. I read a while back that people read far less on the internet than in a newspaper - anymore than 2 or 3 lines and they wont read, just scan. So make key words in bold for if they do scan, and also break it up every 2 or 3 lines with a gap of a line or so. On download links add the name of of the download, file size and file type and keep it out of the main copy so that people can pick it out easily. Put quotes in italics also. Just keep looking at every ofp fan site and general newsites for ideas though. The BBC News site i think is really good. You got the main storys and than sub ones, all on the front page and thne you click to the full story. I would love to see a fansite in that type of design. Its probably quite difficult to make though.
jakerod 254 Posted April 25, 2006 I agree with what hotshot said. Also according to my webpage design book here the areas of most importance in order are: 1. Center of the Page 2. Banner 3. Right hand side 4. Bottom 5. Left hand side Also says that some people zigzag down the page from left to right with their eyes while others sweep it in a big circle from top to bottom. GoOB 0 Posted April 25, 2006 The only thing I dislike about the current design is that it feels a bit too centered. Don't be afraid of air and/or white spaces!
j w 0 Posted April 25, 2006 Well, a white can look bad if it doesn't fit with the design you have, but keep the colors light, like these forums, darker color is just pain for the eyes after a while. Sharp lines that cut off the segments of the site looks very nice if you implement them in a good way. And don't clutter up your site with text, have it in parts, don't be afraid for getting "long" pages, it will look alot better in the end, if you make a few rowchanges. And as GoOB said, it feels to centered, put it to the right and have a banner (going from the top down) with links (pictures in small format) That would look nice. And I will change my last statement, your softer lines look very nice with your site, also with the font-style. And the statement "Last changed" should be in GMT or another big timezone-thingie (lost in translation ) That should also stand in the same size as "2005 Design Team All right reserved" does, under the boxes with info, thouhg, centered. crashdome 3 Posted April 25, 2006 Hmm... when I first went to your site, I thought "portal" ... but it seems you did this by hand? I applaud your efforts! However, I do recommend using a CMS if you are going to have content like that.
Nightjay0044 1 Posted April 25, 2006 @HotShot~ Thanks for the response. yeah, there is that blue banner header on top that says "Ofp Designing team and Ofp community resource". I can't get that off there. I don't know if I can. The host that I'm going through is Freewebs Sos they don't always have things that other hosts would sometimes I think. Otherwise, the site that I have is just a basic text editor, it's no HTML what's so ever. I know basics of HTML but not enough to create the website on how it looks now. Quote[/b] ]On download links add the name of of the download, file size and file type and keep it out of the main copy so that people can pick it out easily. Yes, that is one flaw I noticed, that I need to correct @GoOB~ Quote[/b] ]The only thing I dislike about the current design is that it feels a bit too centered. Don't be afraid of air and/or white spaces! When you say the terms air or white spaces, what do you mean by that, not familiar with them? But I'm sure once you explain them I will be. Thanks.. @J W~ THanks for your reply. @CrashDome~ Quote[/b] ]Hmm... when I first went to your site, I thought "portal" ... but it seems you did this by hand? Yes it's done by hand but I have text editor with no HTML...
Placebo 29 Posted April 26, 2006 As an OT topic I'd say it's too OT for OT and would have to close it, however I think it's probably suited fairly well as a discussion topic in S&F
