Konyak! 0 Posted January 25, 2006 Hi, Quick question: Just invested in a gigabit switch and NIC's + cables, and have a 4 computer lan once a week. I thought it would decrease the stuttering that we get in CTI and larger missions (BAS stuff) and I found it hasn't changed a thing I also thought it was odd that between two machines, we see up to 20 in ping. So my question is, is that a normal ping on such a fast network, and also, should I be using sockets or Directplay when we start a game? Note: We aren't running a dedicated server, just host on the fastest comp on the lan: 2.53ghz P4 1gig mem. Seriously thinking about returning all the gig-network stuff cause I was getting about the same ping on the 100 base net I had. Thanks for the advise that will follow bountifully
Metal Heart 0 Posted January 26, 2006 I'd recommend returning the gigabit stuff, getting a dedicated server and using sockets protocol. Even 10mbit lan won't be used to it's full bandwith unless you have like 20+ player lan or something.
Konyak! 0 Posted January 26, 2006 Thanks MH. Any reccomended minimum specs for the ded server? Konyak
zyklone 1 Posted January 26, 2006 Uhm, you won't see any real difference at all between 20ms in ping and 1ms.
Metal Heart 0 Posted January 26, 2006 Quote[/b] ]Any reccomended minimum specs for the ded server? Depends on the missions, CTI can get quite heavy because of all the AI and scripts running. You could estimate it by using one of the four computers as a dedicated server and monitor the server performance with #monitor command and task manager. Konyak! 0 Posted January 27, 2006 Ok guys, thanks for that. One final thing, can one computer that is slower (less ram for instance) than the other computers, slow the game down for everyone, even though it's got a good connection? Or will that result in a desynch and not make the other comps stutter?
