Major Fubar 0 Posted January 20, 2002 Well, I'm sure this has been discussed before, but forgive me for being a newbie. The mortar in OpFlash (actually a rifle grenade) is so horribly hard to aim it's almost useless (grenade launchers aren't much better for that matter!). The little circle you get to use as a sight is about as useful as udders on a bull. You either fire about 200 meters further than you intended, or too short (often blowing the crap out of yourself and your team). I know it is a matter of practice, and believe me, I've tried, but still miss as often as I hit. It’s a real shame, because the mortar has a huge blast radius and is great against troop formations. I am creating a "mission" with the editor for just this purpose (mortar and grenade launcher practice), consisting of man-shaped targets and unarmed enemy troops. I will post it when I have perfected it. OK, maybe I'm being a little hard on mortars, and I should point out that I think OpFalsh is one of the best and most realistic military games ever. If anyone has any tips regarding accurately aiming the mortar or grenade launcher, I'd be very happy to hear it.
amos m 0 Posted January 20, 2002 I got one. Turn your cross hair off. You don't even really use the cross hair for mortar/grenade fire. Use judgement. Turnig the crosshair off makes ofp harder and more realistic anyway. Difficulty = Fun.
Konyak-2 0 Posted January 20, 2002 I'm 100% with Amos on this one. As you say, the blast is very effective, and if you had an idiot proof aiming sight on this thing, it'd be pretty boring in MP. I have crosshairs off, and it doesn't take too long to get a feel for the launchers and the mortars. IRL you would have no certain way to aim it except by practise. So if some guy get's me and my group with a mortar, ReSpeCt to him! It's better this way. Konyak
countzero 0 Posted January 20, 2002 dont the grenade launchers and mortars come with flip up iron sites?? i seem to remember this with the demo. did they take it out?
amos m 0 Posted January 20, 2002 umm. They're also useless because u can line a target up with that site, but your weapon will be aimed directly at that target, not allowing for the arc you need to fire this type of weapon. So basically, to shoot at what you're aiming for if they're at a distance, you're looking at the sky. And the mortar is fired from the rifle.
N.o.R.S.u 0 Posted January 20, 2002 Yep, there were sights for grenade launchers in the first demo, but not anymore (actually they didn't work very good). But it would be nice to have a proper crosshair/sights for the mortars and grenade launchers, maybe in the next patch?
Major Fubar 0 Posted January 20, 2002 I'm not too sure about the M203, but I know the old "blooper" M79 grenade launcher (the direct ancestor of the M203) had a flip-up iron sight, with ranges marked as notches up the sights. You make a very good point about the fun aspect though. It would get boring if a single mortar shot could wipe out every squad you encountered. But I do find the AI to be uncannily accurate with the darn things, and find it quite difficult getting AI under my control to use them effectively! I guess I should just be happy the Russkies aren't cutting loose with an AGS-30 full auto grenade launcher! Â
caz 0 Posted January 20, 2002 coming from a Tribes II background i find the mortars easy to use i just use the 1st one as a ranger and then adjust to where i want the rest to land and mortars/gernade launchers etc are devasting on multiplayer...u have NO idea where they are coming from and it really makes u panic and hide - lol
