hellfish6 7 Posted December 13, 2005 Click here It was in the link you posted. I haven't tested it, but I imagine it works fine. It's probably the only AH56 you'll ever see in a game.

Mr_Tea 0 Posted December 13, 2005 I`ve found it. AH-56 Cheyenne V1.1 My link works, i uploaded it to rapidshare. Scroll down and click free. I downloaded this addon in july 2003, so it`s an old one. Don`t look that good, but it`s working. The link on OFP.info works too, it`s the same version of that addon that i have uploaded.

Guest RKSL-Rock Posted December 13, 2005 thats one ugly bird. Its the one that failed in the fly off against the AH64 Apache. IIRC is failed miserably making it a pretty much 1 horse race. Lots of embarrassing technical troubles during the trials.
Mr_Tea 0 Posted December 13, 2005 thats one ugly bird. Noone worked on this for years. New textures would help, me thinks.

xnodunitx 0 Posted December 13, 2005 Heh...yeah....the cockpits definatly oversized compared to the bird http://www.aerofiles.com/lock-ah56a.jpg and people think the AH-64 looks ugly, bwhahaha they need to see that thing, still I don't understand why people think the AH-64 irl looks ugly, but thats getting ot. My guess is that unless somebody gets bored, the AH-56 won't get a texture update,it was terrible in testing stages and nobody would probably use it,so why bother? echo1 0 Posted December 13, 2005 thats one ugly bird. Its the one that failed in the fly off against the AH64 Apache. IIRC is failed miserably making it a pretty much 1 horse race. Lots of embarrassing technical troubles during the trials. It was originally designed around the Vietnam period to be a 'flying-tank' but it got delayed and costs shot up. All the time, the Army used the Cobra. The Apache came much later, and the chopper that lost the flyoff against it was a Bell design that looked like a Cobra on steroids... franze 196 Posted December 14, 2005 The story goes that the AH-56 was a big-budget Army program, something like what the Comanche was in the recent years, that was promising a lot without delivering it. Basically, they were trying to squeeze a high speed aircraft out of a whirlybird. Now, some other guys needed attack helicopters in Vietnam, and they needed them desperately; at the time, Bell already had the AH-1 ready to go for service. The brass didn't want to give up the AH-56 but the commanders were desperate, so a proponent of each program met with a general of higher rank and listened to their arguments. The end result was they bought the Cobra and scrapped the AH-56 - in other words, a great deal.
Guest RKSL-Rock Posted December 14, 2005 The Apache came much later, and the chopper that lost the flyoff against it was a Bell design that looked like a Cobra on steroids... The Army -- in cooperation with industry -- began developing the AH-56 Cheyenne and the AH-64 Apache during the final years of the Vietnam conflict.Lockheed rolled-out the first prototype on May 3, 1967. Because of the advanced technologies in the AH-56 Cheyenne, the program ran into serious delays and cost overruns. Unfortunately, the Cheyenne experienced developmental difficulties with some of the new technology it employed. By the time the aircraft was ready for production in 1972, the Army was becoming interested in a helicopter with night and all-weather attack capability In December 1976 the Army selected the Hughes YAM-64 for production During 1974 the US Army considered reviving the AH-56 project with Lockheed pitching an uprated airframe with a new all weather avionics suite…A fly-off evaluation was conducted in 1975 with the Lockheed Cheyenne pitched against Hughes’ Apache prototype and the uprated Bell Cobra. A series of mock attacks flying US Army tactics were arranged. The trials proved to be a disaster for the Lockheed team, cursed with electrical faults the Cheyenne failed to fly nearly half the sorties without some kind of critical error. The cobra was a known entity during a time of war - upgrading something you know works is always safer than try something completely new. With hindsight even the Lockheed team admitted that the Cheyenne had too many faults to rectify easily or cost effectively. Faced with the AH-64’s capability and the change in tactics and weapons in the early 70’s the AH-56 was not able to keep up. I think the best description I’ve read was: â€A good idea, badly executedâ€.
franze 196 Posted December 14, 2005 FAS and Jane's are a little flawed here because the AH-56 got axed shortly before the AAH program was started. I'd have to look it up but since it was during the "Mac the Knife" era, military budgeting was pretty harsh. Personally, the idea behind the AH-56 was a very flawed way of thinking - if it has to go fast, you might as well just use a fixed wing aircraft.
