Equipment 1980-85

Recommended Posts

Well, I really like the original setting of OFP in '85 (with Resistance being '84).

What I need is someone who can show me the direction what equipment was used between 1980 and 1985 for both NATO and Warsaw Pact nations.

And I mean literally everything: Rifles, Machine Guns, Backpacks, Radios, short: personal equipment, but also vehicles: Jeeps, Trucks, APCs/IFVs, Armor, Helos and Jets..

I'd like to know especially for US, West Germany, East Germany and Soviet Union, but other nations are welcome, too.

I guess, visiting sites like fas.org is a must, though it's pretty tough to find out, when what vehicles were used (example: what was the predecessor of the 5t truck in OFP?)

If someone knows a site that describes military equipment in the early 80s, I'd appreciate posting a link to it.

I hope it doesn't sound like I want it on a silver plate (but it'd be nice! )   wink_o.gif

The free wargame WinSP:MBT contains realistic (i think) order of battles and so equipments for a very lot of nations.

This for several years of modern combat starting from 1946 up to 2020.

So i guess giving a look to their OOB should be a very nice source of informations for you and the 80/85 years.

Maybe not what you´re looking for but...

there was a paperback roleplaying game named Twillight 2000, published in the 80's that covered a fictional conflict between NATO and the Warsaw pact in Europe.

Despite the name (2000), the paperback listed a lot of equipment (not only weapons and vehicles) used by every european army availiable in 1984. The books were also illustrated.

TWILLIGHT 2000

Publisher: Games Designers' Workshop (USA)

Author: Franck Chadwick

First publication: 1984

Genre: Military post apocalyptic set after the third world war.

If you can get hold of the 1984 or 1986 editions I think you will find what you need. Later editions from the 90's was updated with newer technology (and all the feeling of the original game faded away).

I have a bunch of Twilight 2000 books, including most of the vehicle guides if you need reference materiel.

Just ask me for specifics and I'll hook you up. I don't want to transcribe the entire set of books.

Wow, thanks a lot for that link. I didn't know about it (probably because I have a dislike for hex-based games). But that encyclopedia-thing is very nice.

@Ironsight

Thanks for that info, I probably use the wrong keywords in google, I've seen some M7xx or M8xx, but no M35!

@Hellfish

Thanks for your offer; I'll ask you, when it comes to details, for now that WinSP-game will suffice to get the "big picture".

I thought Resistance was in 82 not 84? It must have been because in Resistance they it mentions about Brezhnev being in power, who died in '82 biggrin_o.gif

Out of curiousity, are you planning to do anything with all this info or do you just wantto find out some info? whistle.gif

I don't plan anything, I just want to stuff all that info into my head and live with it   tounge2.gif

Of course I've got some plans, but I don't want to announce anything. You know, all the Mods that are announced and vanish after some weeks or months? (though this project is almost 4 years old...)

I'm only going to announce what it is, when we got our first major release.
