.pablo. 0 Posted November 29, 2005 yeah i'm running XP; my email address is pablo_m123@yahoo.com thanks for your help!
.pablo. 0 Posted November 30, 2005 ugh, i got it, but it doesn't work either...is it because i'm running xp? could i send you the .dem and have you convert it for me? edit: oh yeah, thanks for sending it!
Planck 1 Posted November 30, 2005 No problem, send it along, hopefully it will work ok here, at least it has always worked for me. Planck
.pablo. 0 Posted November 30, 2005 here's the file, its 450kb: http://s51.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0QM5CX739XYWS1VCPBCHHCCOJ9 also, how would i go about splitting my map up into 4 parts to convert individually with snYpir's converter (just curious)? could i do it in microdem? btw, here're some pics from stuff i got done last night: i figured out how to get forests on my island, which made it look absolutely fantastic in-game, and was actually really easy to do (thank you WrpTool!). on the south side of the lake looking north-east watching a summer storm developing i also wanted to have actual visual representations of the size of each map, as i was getting tired of having to use my imagination: a 12.8km x 12.8km map (examples: BIS islands, Tonal, Afghanistan, 99% of released islands) a 25.6km x 25.6km map (examples: PMC Rattler, PMC Rugen) a 51.2km x 51.2km map (examples: none known) a 102.4km x 102.4km map (examples: none known) looking at the last one, i'm impressed they were able to get a map of that size in-game at all, even with no objects. right now i'm trying to figure out how to do transitions between the sand of the lake to the grass of the area between the lake and the woods, to the dark woods floor of the woods. Planck 1 Posted November 30, 2005 Ok, I got your file. However it produces a 1kb .ter file when I try also. Looking at your DEM in Microdem.....It isn't square. Something like 20km X 14km I don't know for sure why it doesn't convert with MDEM4TER, but I suspect it might be because of the newer Microdem, it might have changed the output format slightly and so the converter fails. I know that the older version of Microdem refuses to load this DEM. Is this map supposed to be 12.8km X 12.8km, or is it supposed to be bigger. I can maybe get a 12.8km X 12.8km map out of it, but not anything bigger. I could try anyway. Please let me know. Planck
.pablo. 0 Posted November 30, 2005 the full dem's dimensions: x range - 19,870m y range - 14,287m i wanted to try to get it on a 25.6km map; i already have a 12.8km cropped version (pics above), but i wanted to see if i could get the whole thing in ofp...if i changed the dem's size to be a square, would the converter work? do you know how i could do that? otherwise, do you know how i could split the dem into 4 smaller square dems? Planck 1 Posted November 30, 2005 Ok, I loaded this into the new Microdem and saved as ASCII xyz, then imported into the old Microdem as ASCII xyz, then resaved as a DEM. I now have this converted to a .ter file and also to a lon/lat text file. Which, if any, do you want? EDIT: I sent both anyway. Planck
.pablo. 0 Posted November 30, 2005 thank you so much! unfortunately wrptool seems to take the data as it comes, so i get a bunch of mush at the bottom of the map; i think all i would need to do is to add elevation data to the sides of the .dem/.ter/.txt to make it 25.6kmx25.6km, and it would work flawlessly. unfortunately i can't figure out how to resize the map with microdem or terragen! do you know how i could do that? Planck 1 Posted November 30, 2005 Really, what you need to do is get all the dems that cover the area you want, enought to cover more than 25.6km X 25.6km. Next you need to merge them in Micrdem, and then cut out the exact area you want to make your DEM for conversion. I'll go and get the dems myself and see if I can do this for you. No promises mind, but I see no problems......yet. EDIT: Ok, I got all the DEM's and have made a new DEM, 25.6 X 25.6 out of the merge. It has been converted to a .ter files and also a lon/lat text file. I'll send them off to you. There are a few faults present on the DEMs which will be apparent on your map. Nothing I can do about them they will have to be fixed by hand. Anyway.......sending now. Planck
.pablo. 0 Posted November 30, 2005 Quote[/b] ]Really, what you need to do is get all the dems that cover the area you want, enought to cover more than 25.6km X 25.6km. that's what i originally wanted to do, but i couldn't find any more dems for that region at the GIS data depot... edit: i just rechecked, and there actually is more dem data that i didn't notice! i now have enough horizontal data for a 25.6km map, i just have to look for the 3 dems that are north or south of the three i have now in order to fill out the vertical data... Planck 1 Posted November 30, 2005 Check your mail. I did it already, you have new files. Planck
.pablo. 0 Posted November 30, 2005 how did you do that?? where did you get the dems?? thank you so much!!
Planck 1 Posted November 30, 2005 Same place as you, GIS Data Depot, hope it works ok. Planck
.pablo. 0 Posted November 30, 2005 what dems specifically did you use? how did you find them? i was selecting a state->county->area, but i couldn't find any other areas nearby... are the imperfections caused by missing data? i think they could be fixed by using microdem->in/out->edit->fill dem holes, if i had the dem. could you send me the old version of microdem (using yousendit or something)? i was able to get the 25.6km map in-game, and it is just gorgeous; there are problems, however: - there are land elevations in the map that are below the level of the lake, so that if i were to put the lake under water i would also put these land elevations under water. - also, the island is 50mb with just forests on it, which leads me to believe it will be absolutely huge with the rest of the objects. but other than these small problems, it seems to be working fine; now i'm gonna have to make a decision on which version to work on (the 12.8 or the 25.6)... oh yeah, by the way, i've been getting this weird error with all of the versions whenever i go in-game: No entry 'config.cpp/CfgPatches/Rangeley.units' any idea what it means? thank you again for all your help planck!
Planck 1 Posted November 30, 2005 Your error is in your config for whatever objects you have on the map. In the CfgPatches section. Post your config and I might spot the error. I'll see if I can send the merged dem to you as well as a copy of the Microdem .exe file.........the old version. Just drop it in and it should still work, backup the original .exe though. .pablo. 0 Posted December 1, 2005 i just used snYpir's config.cpp from his wrp tutorial: <table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Code Sample </td></tr><tr><td id="CODE">// some basic defines #define TEast 0 #define TWest 1 #define TGuerrila 2 #define TCivilian 3 #define TSideUnknown 4 #define TEnemy 5 #define TFriendly 6 #define TLogic 7 #define true 1 #define false 0 // type scope #define private 0 #define protected 1 #define public 2 class CfgPatches { class Rangeley { requiredVersion = 1.46; }; }; class CfgWorldList { class Rangeley {}; }; class CfgWorlds { class DefaultWorld {}; class Rangeley: DefaultWorld { worldName="\Rangeley\Rangeley.wrp"; description="Rangeley"; icon="_eden.paa"; startTime="12:00"; startDate="26/4/87"; centerPosition[]={6375,6375,0}; startWeather=0.300000; startFog=0.000000; forecastWeather=0.300000; forecastFog=0.000000; seagullPos[]={6375,6375}; ilsPosition[]={0,0,0}; ilsDirection[]={0,0.080000,1}; ilsTaxiIn[]={}; ilsTaxiOff[]={}; class Sounds { sounds[]={}; }; class Animation { vehicles[]={}; }; class Names { class Rangeley_Maine { name="Rangeley, Maine"; position[]={11542.8574, 12428.5713, 0}; }; }; }; };

.pablo. 0 Posted December 1, 2005 works perfectly! thank you! it looks like my struggles with dems are over for now (until i get the urge to put the world map in-game...); i'll keep posting pictures of my progress in here, but it looks like the rest of my problems are going to be wrptool related and not microdem/terragen/wilbur/wrpedit/dem2ter/etc. related. thanks again for all your help planck! .pablo. 0 Posted December 14, 2005 Planck: ok, after a 2 week hiatus, i'm going to try to make some more progress with my map; the first problem i've run into is that the merged DEM you sent me already had the missing data filled in! can you explain to me where you found the data (as in exact links, i remember you got it from the same website as i did), or send me the original merged DEM (if you still have it)? thank you!
Planck 1 Posted December 14, 2005 Luckily for you .pablo I still have the merged DEM I did for you. The DEM I sent you did not have the missing data filled in....you can see the vertical line where 2 DEM's joined near the bottom left of the merged DEM. Even better I sorted the area that had the missing data....it's all nice and smooth now. If you want, I can send you this newer DEM. I'll send it anyway. DaKa 0 Posted January 22, 2008 Hey guys, it has been some time since this post was last used, but I think it suites my problem, so here it goes (I hope I posted this on the good thread lol): I am using your DEM-WrpEdit tutorial Planck, and I am having some troubles in downloading some one of the file called "MDM4TER.exe". I only found the "MDM2TER.exe" and I thought that I should try this, until I google for MDM4TER.exe (which failed). I have followed all the steps (ok step) until I need to input the path for hte .dem file. When I am trying to input the path for the .dem file (Here's what I wrote: C:\adam\map\probe.dem -the folders exist-) the next thing appears in the MDM2TER.exe's window: "xxCannot open filec:\adam\map\probe.demxx". Now here are my questions comming: -Is the MDM2TER.exe is suitable for map making in ArmA? -Where can I get the MDM4TER.exe? By the way: Thanks for the tutorial for the DEM-WrpEdit, it is clear and understandable , now if I could just find the MDM4TER.....
Planck 1 Posted January 22, 2008 Well, nothing stands still for long in this world....I imagine MDEM2TER is going to work the same way as the older file did. It converts Microdem format to Terragen format apparently. If you have already got MDEM2TER try it and see if it works as expected. I have no idea where you got it but my normal source for this sort of stuff was: http://www.terrainmap.com/index.html#top Check there to see if you have the latest one, presuming it is even being updated any more. DaKa 0 Posted January 23, 2008 Yes, I was looking there, but I couldn't find it. And what did you mean by the "older file"? Sorry for these tiring questions, I am new to this whole thing. Or will these stuff work on Vista? Here's the link of the picture about my problem: http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd128/ICMDaKa/Error.jpg I hope it helps! I am at the first step and I can't go on loool, and when I create the file in MDEM2TER VC++, it ain't asking me about the output .ter file.
Planck 1 Posted January 23, 2008 By older file I meant MDEM4TER, I imagine MDEM2TER is a replacement for it. It is on the site I linked to btw, if you scroll the main window down to the very bottom you will find it, along with a few other converters. I don't run Vista so I have no idea if this stuff will work on Vista. I don't intend to use Vista until there is no other alternative. Planck
