Sarge6754 0 Posted August 10, 2005 READ ENTIRE POST BEFORE REPLYING! Since there is most likely going to be a vastly improved physics engine in Armed Assault, I'd like to suggest one way that the player could manipulate objects with it. It works as follows: --------------------------------------------------------------- Normally, the control scheme will be the same as OFP, except, instead of a menu in the lower right of the screen, the player would have a simple "use" function that could be mapped to any key. When this key is pressed and held down, the soldier will quickly holster any drawn weapons and only hands will be out. Now, the crosshair will be guidance for the hands. If the player unpresses the use key, then the previous weapon will be quickly drawn again. During this "use" mode, when the key is pressed, and the player gets within arms reach of any: weapon, corpse, ammocrate, vehicledoor, etc.. and then the player presses their "fire" button, then the in-game character will either: pick up a weapon or corpse, open an ammocrate, or open a vehicle door and get in. If there are no interactive objects within arms reach when the player presses "fire" in "use" mode, then the player will throw a punch or do nothing, that's up to the devs. So, it becomes a very SIMPLE two key process: 1) Hold down "use" key for when you want to interact. 2) Press "fire" to interact. Now you can see how much better this would be than a menu system. With a menu you have to open it (usually), and then carefully SCROLL up or down a long list to do anything. I am a veteran OFP player, and have gotten used to the menu and can use it fairly quickly, but still, it's ANNOYING! Now, with a "use" key function, the game becomes much more dynamic, the devs and addonmakers would only have to define in the editor whether an object is "useable" or not. Imagine the possibilities of this "use key". You could drag corpses from whatever limb you put the crosshair over while holding down use and pressing fire. Dragging corpses instead of "burying" them!!! The "use" key frees up the mousewheel to do stuff like select weapons or items quickly! This key, if implemented would allow the game to be more realistic, more fun, more streamlined, and it would STOP the player from getting KILLED while they navigate the old MENU. ****I am only suggesting that the devs add this to Armed Assault if they have ALREADY added rag-doll-physics, AND a vastly improved physics engine. If they have done that, then it is a very MINOR game update, if they haven't added physics like such, then don't attempt to do all this in ArmA, save it for Game 2. **** The possibilities are endless, so please tell me if you think this is a good idea or not. ------------------------------------------------------------- READ ENTIRE POST BEFORE REPLYING! jakerod 254 Posted August 10, 2005 Good idea but I think it is more of a NGG(OFP2) thing. Very good idea though.
ade_mcc 0 Posted August 10, 2005 Sorry, couldn't be bothered to read the entire post.* Point 1 - It has been said in here somewhere that no more suggestions will be implemented into AA. (I will try and find a source to verify this). You would be better putting this into the NextGenerationPCGame Suggestions forum. Point 2 - There are many things in the action menu that dont corespond with an interation with something on screen. Immediatly I can think of 'items to drop' and 'to eject out of a vehicle/aircraft etc.' So although I do think its a good idea, I don't think that it would be adequate as a total replacement to the action menu. * - my little joke, course I did! hahaha
Sarge6754 0 Posted August 10, 2005 I think that stuff such as "eject" and "drop weapon" should be hotkeys on the keyboard. Even so, if the player didn't map a hotkey for ejecting from the vehicle, they might press the "use" function and click the door to get out. (If in a plane, click the ejection handle or the canopy lever). I don't see any need for a menu... Also, I know the rules about the suggestions, they are as follows: Quote[/b] ]Please do not post suggestion/request/demand regarding Armed Assault. The reason for it is that BIS is certainly not able to bring even a substantial fraction of features suggested here. Also, it seems most people are posting the same suggestions which are already posted in OFP2 forums, leading to duplication and confusion. But, my argument for keeping this thread open is that this suggestion has to do with control layout and is REASONABLE. I am not asking for dynamic sentient AI in all the animals on the island, or anything. All I'm asking for is a minor change in the control scheme which would dramatically improve the game. In addition to this, the thread should stay open because this has not been suggested in the Game 2 forums. Thanks for reading.
Balschoiw 0 Posted August 10, 2005 @ade_mcc: A look on top of the forum section might be a clue No more....
Killbert 0 Posted August 11, 2005 How would that work on items with multiple possible interactions. Like an ammo crate with many different weapons. Even if you had an use key, it would still need a list of actions to choose from, to select a weapon so pick up. I don't think they will change it for ArmA, but I do agree the action menu can be a pain to use when in hurry and when it has lots of actions. Hopefully they can think of some improvements for the sequal.
Guest Ti0n3r Posted August 11, 2005 Use key? No thanks. I love the action menu and I hope it will stick around for borth Armed Assault and Game2.
ade_mcc 0 Posted August 11, 2005 @Balschoiw ah, thats quite obvious when you look, cheers! Dont like the idea of point and click though - I can see things getting complicated in 3rd person view. Further keyboard shortcuts is a possibility though (for NGG).
Waterman 0 Posted August 11, 2005 Many games have "E" as their "use" key. However I think it wouldn't be suitable with ArmA or NGG for reasons like the one above - you need a choice of actions when your at an ammo crate. However it might be an idea to change E from sprint to enter/eject and make shift sprint or something... If its still the same, I wont be complaining, I've got used to it after 4 years... As this makes this topic quite moot here, I am closing it now. Such topics are better to be discussed in Next Gen game forum.
