Buying a joystick

Recommended Posts

I want to get a joystick for OPF MP.

Any suggestions? I want the full loadout.

What SHOULDN'T I get?

Are ALL joysticks fully compatable with OPF?

I don't want to go out and get a $100 CDN Sidewinder, just to come home and see that it's not compatable, or not enough for OPF.

Thanks.

get a saitek X-45.. there is no substitute.. especally for under $100

x45.jpg

its a separate throttle and stick.. its got.. i dunno hundreds of buttons, fully compatable with OFP or any other game..

go to www.saitek.com and check it out.

P.S. I have the X36 which is the same thing, never had any problems.

I read it's description.

It looks perfect for aircraft.

But I'm concerned if it doesn't work as well with other vehicles.

I'm not sure what else I'd use a joystick for, other than air vehicles, but I'd like to be safe than sorry. Y'know.

If I see it in a store, I'll most likely get it. I know the Saitek company, and I know they're one of the best with game controllers. But I want to "shop around" in these forums.

well Ive used it in several games:

Mechwarrior 4.. its AWSOME in that game.

lots of driving games.. works great.

the only thing youll have to get used to is that the stick doesent twist (I.E. rudder) insted it has a rocker rudder on the throttle.. it takes a tad getting used to but the rocker is MUCH MUCH more precise than a twisty stick..

I cant think of a single game accept for maby a 3d shooter game that it wouldent be the best stick for.. I could never stand playing those kinda games with a stick though

I just got a Thrustmaster Top Gun. It's the one with the throttle that you can separate from the joystick. I really like it because:

1. The throttle feels nice on my left hand.

2. The location of the buttons.

3. You can choose whether you want rudders as a) twisting joystick or b) spring loaded rocker lever in front of throttle. (I like b).

4. it's very comfortable.

And lastly, it was $59 @ compu$a. You can find it a bit cheaper, I'm sure.

The control is amazing on this thing. I'm replaying all the air missions now.

If u want somethink that you can use with other vehicle's, make sure it has twist, so that you can pilot tanks (or mechs) with ease.

Believe me, i have force feedback, and its not great if u try and use your freinds joystick that isnt force feedback, it goes flying everywhere because you keep putting too much pressure on it smile.gif

I have a Wingman Force 3d but it's "slightly" malfunctioning. I have an old Wingman Extreme and it's broken too so one thing is for sure. I'm never gonna buy any of the Wingman series again. They tend to break while just being on my desk.

I just wan't a good and durable joystick without Force Feedback.

Ive never had any trouble with mine, but it has lessened its force feedback over the last 3 years or so slightly, but microsoft make very good sturdy joysticks i hear.

If money is of no concern and force-feedback not a must, then go for the best: Thrustmaster Cougar. It's supposed to be released sometime in february, but it will set you back around 200usd

Alright.

So far:

1. Make sure SOMETHING on it twists, for tanks and rudders.

2. Force feedback.

3. WinXP drivers. Gotta remember this one. tounge.gif

4. Nice long warranty smile.gif

Candidates are:

Thrustmaster series

X-45

Saitek Cyborg 3D Force Stick

Anything else?

I've been reading reviews of X45 and it is pretty good for what I need. I'm probably going to buy it today. Then I can dig out my flight and space sims from my drawer and of course try OFP's helis and planes with a joystick.

The X45 gets solid reviews.

That's what I want, too. But I don't know what stores carry it here in Canada.

I have nice big hands, so I should handle it nicely.

It's a pain in the ass for a large handed(smile.gif) person to find a good mouse, and a good joystick.

the rocker works just as well if not better than the twisty stick because it performs the same function as the twist but also doesent effect the other Axis in any way..

Clean it, then.

Wingman 3D hasn't let me down, ever. (cept when I had to open it and clean it.) But I DID it! It's a very nice stick, with 7 buttons and twist!

the cyborg 3d is not ment for flight.. it doesent have the same feel as a flightstick. I have one.. a cyborg3d gold.. as you move the handle further from center you DO NOT get more resistance.. this makes flight sims feel *wierd*.. but for 3d shooter games and mechwarrior type stuff it would be great

I have a Logitech WingMan Extreme, and let me tell you, it is crap!

The layout is actually pretty good and its got a nice sturdy base, problem is the twisting z-axis. With mine, when I twist to the right, it reads it as twisting to the left, unless I go ALL the way to the right. Ive recalibrated many times and even reinstalled the drivers, no fix.

Also, no matter how big I set the dead zone its still ULTRA-sensitive. I wouldnt recomend buying anything from the WingMan series either....

Yeah, Wingman and Sidewinder stuff used to be the best.

But they were always pretty bad.

Thrustmaster stuff is for the lunatic teenager that gets angry whenever he(HE) loses.

Saitek is good enough for the XBox, so it must be damn good!

The X45 is what I want. But if it's over what I want to pay... Well I don't know... Cyborg 3D Force Stick it is.

The Cyborg 3D Force is still a great joystick. It just isn't HOTAS, that's all.

HOTAS - Hands On Throttle And Stick
