The Frenchman 0 Posted July 8, 2005 Many of you may have not heard of the Mac game Marathon, mostly because you don't have Macs. Well now you can play all 3 games for FREE and LEGAL! ON A PC! Here!    The game Marathon is actually a very important part of  gaming history. It was the first FPS to have the ability to look up and down, not just side to side.     Marathon was made by the same people who made HALO and HALO 2 and many Marathon fans have said Halo is a dumbed down Marathon. Marathon follows a security officer onboard a colony ship on its way to Tau Ceti, a 300 year voyage on the UESC Marathon. The Marathon was the former moon Deimos, which was hollowed out and made into a large colony ship, called C.R.I.S.T. Ships. On board this ship, there was 3 A.I. Constructs. A few years later after the colony's creation, an Alien race of slavers called the Pfhor(the guy in my sig) attack the colony. There are many twists along the way. Marathon 2 follows the officer 17 years after the original game and Marathon Infinity is about an alternative universe where some of the events of the other two games did not happen. This game has been called the first FPS to have such a complex plot, even before Half Life(gasp ) The game itself is filled with references from different sources; from Greek history to Beavis and Butthead to Shakespeare. It has been over a decade and the Marathon community still speculate over the meaning of corrupted computer code of the purged AIs.  Though the graphics are not much better than the original DOOM, I am sure you will all enjoy playing the entire series from begining to end. The Frenchman 0 Posted July 9, 2005 @ July 09 2005,16:14)]Seems great, but how do I open the "marathon.sit" file ?From the network it seems totally amazing I play the SE version which has an easier installation and vastly improved music(The song Rushing now kicks major ass. ) Simply download M1A1 for SDL v1.6 (Special Edition for Windows only) Here Go to downloads then Aleph One SDL; its on that page. The music is downloaded separately and is found on the same page. When finished downloading, put the music files in M1A1 Tracks folder in the Marathon Special Edition folder. I highly suggest getting the music files, its not the same without them. Now go kill some Pfhor!
shinRaiden 0 Posted July 9, 2005 I get a nasty monitor flickering and dimming when I navigate the main menu and into the game. Anybody else seen this?
The Frenchman 0 Posted July 9, 2005 I have it too but I don't know what causes it though. Its harmless afaik... Edit:Also remember that all 3 games have the optional use of mouse control. Just a reminder for all of those who hate using arrow keys for looking around.
Panda-PL- 0 Posted July 9, 2005 I have it too but I don't know what causes it though. Its harmless afaik... Same here. Pluss the fullscreen mode doesnt work on my XP. Doesn't matter anyway . Interesting thing is that in window mode not only the window but entire Windows view does that. That's pretty strange as you'd expect the opposite.
shinRaiden 0 Posted July 9, 2005 k, must be an OpenGL implementation thing with laggy device abstraction and initialization. Happens on both of my duel monitors, I run it in windowed. Paniced for a bit as I thought maybe my PSU was browning out my video card.
Panda-PL- 0 Posted July 9, 2005 After a day of playing I must say the game rocks. Compared to it Halo seems nice and easy. Marathon can really scare you. What I love about the game - the levels are really what kicks a**! The game really looks like Halo .You walk and it's so calm and silent and then... Like after first teleportation I walked into two aliens... sleeping? Â They seemed equally scared as me. (I almost heard " Yaa! He's everywhere!") Now what I didn't like - the mouse steering seems bulky. And another thig is that enemies seem head-shot immune This is bad, because in Halo i often preffered handgun over the riffle as it was way more effective.:( At least the magnum looks allright, almost like in Halo. And of course Doom is nothing compared to this game! Here everything is logical and organised - not you and 20 monsters out of nowhere. Anyway Bungie ROCKS! Only now I see what Halo missed And yeah, Halo was way too short and not scary enough. mommy! Help! I'm scared to play now. I must get some rest.
The Frenchman 0 Posted July 20, 2005 @ July 10 2005,12:22)](I almost heard " Yaa! He's everywhere!") Sound Familiar? (search for He's Everywhere! ) Though Marathon and HALO are in completely different universes, there are uncanny references.
