Aurora Borealis?

Anybody see it?

I'm living in central Kansas and I could see it great. At about 0530z I was out in the middle of nowhere with my camera (pictures didn't turn out) watching the northern lights. Simply amazing to actually see this for the first time ever.

I figure if I can see it in Kansas other people can see it too.

Did anybody?

Seen it once this past summer about midnight (Seattle is roughly 49deg north). Really faint because of city lights, but still distinct. We're starting on the downslope side of the sunspot cycle, so it may be a while before the southern latitudes get another dose again.

I've never seen it before so I was pretty excited about it. Especially living in central Kansas.

Ahh the good old northern lights. As we like to call it.

Us canucks see it a lot. At least in mid to northern Alberta. It's pretty cool, but I think it's something we take for granted here.

It gets even better once you get up into the northwest territories or so I hear from my cousin who works up there.

Abilty to see them can reach as far as northern Texas, it just depends on the strength of the solar activity and the atmosphere.

It didn't happen as much last night as it did the night before. Before the Kp (an index of the geomagnetic activity on a scale from 1-10) was at a 9 for a few hours. Last night I think it peaked at 7. Maybe tonight we'll get lucky.

I read somewhere that the Kp has to be at least a 9 for it to be visible here in Kansas. The higher north you are the lower it has to be.

Apparently it was visible in some parts of Australia last night, too. I couldn't see anything though.

i've never even seen stars that bright! and the only aurora i've seen was that mach6 plane... ON PICTURES!
