Im a Newbie, got some questions.

Recommended Posts

First off I have to say this game rocks. I really enjoy all the variations it offers. I have some questions that I need info on, now that I can actually post here :-)

First, Does it really matter if people in your squad die? I mean other than pride of loseing men.

How do I tell tell tanks and soldiers under my command to repair/call medic? I can do it for myself but can't find the command for them.

Is their and secret to killing T-80's? They the only tank that give me trouble.

Am I cheating by stealing the enemy helicopters in some of the missions?

Why is the AT-4 on the East side? I know I fired a few of these when I was in the US Marine Corps, so the west should have them as well. Not to mention the Carl Gustov(spelling?) sounds like a eastern name to me, no offense east guys and gals.

I hear about three islands but only seen 2 so far, the Everon and Maldon. We took Maldon back and are attacking Everon now, so when does this third Island come in?

Other than those I think im starting get better at commanding my troops. This is a great game and I really like it. Thx in advance to anyone that give me answers to some or all of my questions.

I'll give it a shot to answer your questions so here it goes:

1) Not really. It does effect your final score for the mission, you lose points for every man that dies and score points for the men you kill. I think that if you do poorly on enough missions then you can lose the campaign.

2) After you INDIVIDUALLY select only 1 man (using the F!-F12 keys) look under the action menu ( #6 I believe ) from there you can tell them to heal, repair, rearm, pick up weapons. Kind of a pain with a 12 man squad after action.

3) Hit them, and then hit them again smile.gif Really that is the only thing you can do. Try to manouver your tank so that you can shoot the T80 then duck back under a hill or other object so you are out of the line of sight of the enemy while you reload. I always find that tank battles always degrade into a lose in knife fight. It is very hard to keep seperation. Also try to avoid the dreaded key buffer. This is where you issue an order but it isn't go through right away because your gunner is calling targets. The command doesn't go through until your charactor speaks it so what happens is that you are hammering the stop key because you want the tank to stop, well all those key strokes are saved in memory. So you then start hammering the key of the next action you want etc. Very frustrating, but only if there is a lot of targets that or gunner keeps calling.

4) Hey if they leave the keys in the ignition its there own fault biggrin.gif. Really there is no right way of doing a mission. That is what makes OFP so great. If you think it you try it and if you can do it, then it's not cheating, just like the real world.

5) All Russian equipment have a code name and AT is for Anti Tank. AT4 is what NATO calls that particular model. It isn't the Russian designation though, I believe. Also the name always start with an 'S' I know AT2 was Stagger and there is Swatter, Spiral, etc. Just like all Fighters are a 'F' name, Bombers 'B' etc (play a lot of flight sims so I know most of the Russian planes better).

6) You eventually invade the 3rd Island to drive the Russian out of the region. It's were the Russian launched there raids from to the other Islands.

Glad you love the game. I find when commanding my troops I like to split them up into 2 teams so I have my white squad and a red squad (all this is under the command menus ) this way I can always move in a bounding overwatch and when I do come under fire I can have Red flank. I lose less men this way and they seem to get the enemy in a nasty crossfire a lot and slaughter the enemy.

What I find that really helps commanding the troops is Game Commander. It's a voice reconition software that sends keystrokes to the game for voice commands. I have all the command menu programmed in so I just order my men around smile.gif It makes a HUGE difference. You can check it out here

Well, I'm a civie and newbie, but here it goes;

First, Does it really matter if people in your squad die? I mean other than pride of loseing men.

--->You sacrifice accuracy of the AI(at least for me). j/k...ut having more men to order is better than less.

How do I tell tell tanks and soldiers under my command to repair/call medic? I can do it for myself but can't find the command for them.

--->there should be some commands, the backspace or numbers one...i mean...

Is their and secret to killing T-80's? They the only tank that give me trouble.

--->well, tough question..people talked about this a lot...and it seems like having one satchel charge under rear seems to induce aftershock and cuz fuel tanks to blow, thus disabling the tank.

However, sometimes, if you have to AT it...might need some more ammos than other tanks....hey..it's a heck of a tank u know.. if you want to try how many hits it will take, goto mission editor and place an empty T80 and start firing at it...

Am I cheating by stealing the enemy helicopters in some of the missions?

---->Absolutely not!!! Hey, it's better to use your enemy's weapon on them, as long as enemy doesn't do that to you...

Why is the AT-4 on the East side? I know I fired a few of these when I was in the US Marine Corps, so the west should have them as well. Not to mention the Carl Gustov(spelling?) sounds like a eastern name to me, no offense east guys and gals.

--->no idea

I hear about three islands but only seen 2 so far, the Everon and Maldon. We took Maldon back and are attacking Everon now, so when does this third Island come in?

---->There's Kolguev. I think its on russian side...military isle imo. I also need to finish the darn campaign, so don't know where it will show up. Goto mission editor and it'll give you 4 isles. Another one is Desert Island..a small island with lotsa see surrounding it. no structures whatsoever. But a fun place to roam and blow without hassle of trees.

You know it is cheap in some missions to just steal choppers...like the one where you are caught by the spetznats....I run jump in the BMP haul ass over to the chopper jump in fly it to the hills bail out and so begins the next part....which you speed up the game and run down the hill getting to the US area within maybe 30 seconds....so overall mission around 2 minutes........

Also the mission where you break into the generals place to get the scuds location I managed to steal one of the choppers and take out the other as it lifts off and bombard the whole area biggrin.gif

Im not that far for those missions I guess. I took the russian helicopter in the mission where you are a Black Ops guy and are suppose to use sachel charges on a tank camp. Well I just used the sachel charges on the shilka's and then stole the aircraft and used it to kill lots of tanks and the ammo dump.

Also on the attack on the Hind base, I used 3 charges on 3 of the 4 Hind's, then stole the last one and went all over killing the trucks and tanks that remained before I went to the evac point biggrin.gif

I figured out why I couldn't find the order command to rearm and repair, it is in the action menu and then ya have to hit 0 to see it. I was just hitting 6 for action and didn't ever see anything untill I accedently hit 0 again and it came up. At least thats how I think I did it confused.gif

An easier way to do that mission, is to steal the tractor, drive through the right hand forest, and steal the shilka and kill all the guys who try to get into thier vehicles. The only thing you have to worry about then is the hinds, but thats what the shilka is designed for.

Yeah I do the same in that mission also...I tell my AI buddies to take one and I get another....then use all the ammo land and take another....but I make sure everyone in that base is dead first......

The Carl Gustav Launcher is a Multi-Role Anti-Armor Anti-Personnel Weapon System (MAAWS) which uses high-explosive ammunition. It is a waterproof and reusable recoilless rifle with a Picatinny Fire Control Device (PFCD) sighting system.

Length: 42 inches / 106.7cm

Weight: 25 pounds / 11.34 kg

Caliber: 84mm

Range: 218 to 1422yds / 200 to 1300m

It just HAS to be swedish since the name of our king is

Carl XVI(16) Gustav

Guys I appreciate you're answering the questions being asked and helping out someone who's new to Opf, for that I thank you.

One thing though, can you try to avoid giving away spoilers in later missions if at all possible, I'm sure you'll agree that Opf being the great game that it is it's best to experience these things in the game instead of reading them in the forums smile.gif

A few pics of the Carl-Gustav in action. I couldn't seem to find any history of the weapon anywhere...

Is there any website with information about the Carl Gustav Launcher? Maybe a manual in pdf-format.

Out.
