mr reality 0 Posted October 31, 2004 I know it says that they only use dead chickens but i would bet that some sick person has tried it out with a live one.Even knowing that the pictures on the website are of dead fowl i still think that its a bit unnessecary to have them.I mean we all know what happens if a bird hits a windscreen,do we actually need to see an example of it  . Bobcatt666 0 Posted October 31, 2004 I think its sick, I like it, they still use the chicken cannon, seen a bird impact on a OH-6, and once had a thrush take me off the back of my honda interceptor on the highyway. but don't see a real use for it in OFP its was a huge cannon in a test lab. Not anything that can be carried by man. Evil making like the static ATGM launchers firing Mig's chicken addons.. Just reconfig the atgm modle to be replaced with a dead chicken model. Maybe even put goggles on them.. Should post a warning about the link content to the oppionated and weak at heart to not get offened..
NZXSHADOWS 0 Posted October 31, 2004 Yeah,Where i work we make Window frames for Sikorsky and other Aircraft manufactors and they test out the strength of the windows with other types of projectiles. But I always thought they used frozen chickens though? Bobcatt666 0 Posted October 31, 2004 Yeah they use store purchased frozen foul now, Less of a mess, and they don't have to deal with killing the subject. The bird being fozen better simulates hitting a jet cannoy at high speed, the cannon can fire with higher velosity without blasting the projectile apart in the barrel. Seeing jets fly at a much faster rate of speed it also for passager jets as well. At the crutial point of take off and landings where bird strike is constant. The aircraft is still moving at 400 + mph either direction. Hell fod protectors often can't save your engine from eating a bird. Seen small pebles blown on the flightline croak $$$$ jet engines. Very important now seieng that most military base are surrounded by cities where a jet or transportplane slamming into homes would prove devestating. dm 9 Posted October 31, 2004 Yeah they use store purchased frozen foul now, Â Less of a mess, and they don't have to deal with killing the subject. Â The bird being fozen.... They do buy frozen foul from a store, but they defrost it before firing. Not sure if its a "popular" myth or not, but there is a story that goes along the lines of a new guy loads the cannon with a still frozen chicken, and when he fires it it totally destroys the test object, as well as penetrating the concrete wall behind the test object. Its at this point one of the other technicians asks "you DID defrost the bird right?" Like I said, not sure if its an urban myth or not, but I do know they DO defrost the birds before firing them.
