-Ash- 0 Posted October 18, 2004 Which districts of Prague are Wenceles Square and Old Town btw? Czech tourist maps are a bit hard to read to be honest!!
llauma 0 Posted October 19, 2004 Are these Prauge 1, 2, 3... districts/zones of Prauge city? Also, isn't it Prauge that is used by film makers when the film is supposed to be set in Toronto? I think Toronto is being used sometimes when the movie is supposed to be in New York.. It's much easier to shoot there and it's cheaper. It's impossible to shut down a section of N.Y. just because of a movie. I think that Cold Mountains was shot in Romania.. The old westerns were also often made in Italy. I doubt you could use a European city when it's supposed to be an American city. I am sure that all the cities here have buildings that are older than USA so it would look quite strange. I really need to visit Praha someday.. It looks like a beautiful city.
-Ash- 0 Posted October 19, 2004 Mission Impossible XxX Van Helsing were all filmed in Prague.. Apparently Charles Bridge has been used as a backdrop for London with CGI backgrounds..
Sith 0 Posted October 19, 2004 @ Oct. 19 2004,01:53)]Which districts of Prague are Wenceles Square and Old Town btw? They are both in Prague 1. Here you can find a map with all Prague city districts. And this map shows a closer picture of Prague 1. Charles Bridge (Karluv Most) is clearly indicated. Old Town Square (Starometska) can be found right above the red arrow in the center of the map. Wenceslav Square (Vaclavske Namesti) is the big traffic square pointing to the South-East.
-Ash- 0 Posted October 19, 2004 Thanks Sith.. Very much appreciated Really looking forward to going.. I absolutely love czech beer so can't wait to try some unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell Found a good website that lists all the best pubs in Prague for us beer loving brits: www.praguepubs.co.uk I think I'll be visiting as many pubs as possible.. Also I'll be cheering Sparta on 3rd November against Man Utd!!! I'll have to put Baros's name on the back of my Liverpool FC shirt
Gadger 0 Posted October 19, 2004 If your going to Czech republic, don't forget to visit Ostrava, great little city, although no where near as accomodating for toursists as Prague is. Its roughly 130miles(I think, not to sure on mileage:;): NE of Prague, situated not so far from the Czech/Polska border, great city, and much more like how Prague used to be before it got took over by American and German tourists. denoir 0 Posted October 19, 2004 Out of curiosity, why Prague? For me at least, it doesn't hold much 'real tourist' value. Don't take me wrong - it's a really nice city - I didn't object to spending two days there. I don't however see it as a candidate for a real vacation. Basically, I have a couple of 'touristing' preferences: [*] Somewhere where I can dive (ok, this is a personal thing of mine and I guess it doesn't quite fall into the 'tourist' category) [*] Historical sites (Rome, Athens, Cairo..) [*] Metropols (Paris, London, New York..) [*] Exotic places (China, Tahiti, Thailand..) In addition I have a few places that I personally like to spend time in - but that's mostly because previous positive experiences. Anyway, at least for me Prague doesn't quite fall in any category that would make it a directly interesting choice.
-Ash- 0 Posted October 19, 2004 Out of curiosity, why Prague? It just sounds a really interesting and nice place to visit. It's also very cheap and very different to where I've been before..
Donnervogel 0 Posted October 19, 2004 [*] Somewhere where I can dive (ok, this is a personal thing of mine and I guess it doesn't quite fall into the 'tourist' category) well... I'm sure you can go for some underwater searches for missing persons in the Vltava ;) Quote[/b] ][*] Historical sites (Rome, Athens, Cairo..) 1348 - foundation of one of europe's first universities (first in central europe) in Praque. The Univerzita Karlova. 1355 - Praque being the capital of the Holy Roman Empire under Carl IV. Praque being a hotspot of european culture. 1583 - After Vienna it's again Praque that is the capital of the Holy Roman Empire under Rudolph II. Praque being the centre of european sciences. People like Johannes Kepler or Tycho de Brahe come from Praque. 1618 - the Defenestration of Prague Marking the beginning of the 30-years war (1620 Battle of White Mountain near Praque) that devastated central euope and endet in 1648 with the Peace of Westphalia. A very important treaty for euopean history. It was one of the first real international treaties and it marked the beginn of modern diplomacy. It also marked Sweden as a great power and Sweden got territories in northern germany and could collect taxes from the river mouths of the rivers Elbe and Oder. Thus strenghtening the Swedish position in the baltic sea. It was also the first treaty that officially recognized the Swiss Confederation and the Unified netherlands as independant states. Enough history for me ;) Quote[/b] ][*] Metropols (Paris, London, New York..) while Praque is not a Mega City like the ones you mentioned it still can be called a metropole. It has a rich cultural life and you can find anything you want there. Quote[/b] ][*] Exotic places (China, Tahiti, Thailand..) uhhmm from the view of a chinese person it's maybe quite exotic ;)
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted October 19, 2004 Praque, in my eyes, has a better value than Paris and London when it comes to the ability to "feel" the city. Paris is made in a way that no tourist can ever take part in the french way of living. I lived there and I know that there is a Paris for tourists and that there is a Paris for the parisians. And even if you are an experienced traveller you WONT be able to find the french spots. The parisians are used to tourists since decades and they are more experienced to hide their secret spots than globe trotters to find them. This includes bars, night-clubs, restaurants, expositions. Surprising enough they already start to organise evenings in the Banlieu since most tourists believe that this is a purely arab ghetto. Most tourists already believe they are smart when they know the secret spots of the Marais quarter. London is a bit easier to experience, however eastern capitals  like Prague and Warsaw are still open towards tourists. Lot of cities have a lot of potential but only very few let you access their treasures during a few-day trip. Berlin for example is cheap and friendly as hell, but all doors to the underground culture are closed for tourists.

Nemesis6 0 Posted October 19, 2004 One of my friends goes there often with his family, and he speaks very relatively highly of it, so it can't be that bad. Actually, it would be pretty interesting. Looks pretty European, and if I should say so myself, looks a lot like the place where I live. On a side note - That very friend also told me that you could buy a disabled AK47 - the muzzle was sealed shut. He might have mistaken it with that SA-58, but anyway, could this be true? Jyka 0 Posted October 20, 2004 You should try Becherowka(a drink) when in Prague, it gives you nice warm feeling against possibly cold autumn-day. When I visited Prague we were going to go to Jewish Cemetery, however that part of city was reeeeallly crowded with tourists and line to cemetery was so long that we skipped it.
