Sniper_Kyle 0 Posted July 19, 2004 Ok, I reinstalled OFP, and when I did the auto-check on the OFP Preferences dialogue, it chose Hardware T&L. I feel like a noob asking this, but what is Hardware T&L and what does it do? Does it effect my performance or make graphics look better / worse? Mister Frag 0 Posted July 20, 2004 "Hardware T&L" is Hardware Transformation and Lighting, which allows the game to offload the 3D transformations and lighting calculations from the CPU (your processor) to the GPU (your video card). If you bought a video card anytime in the last three years or so, it will have Hardware T&L support. OFP won't choose this feature if it isn't available. If you turn it off manually, you will lose some graphical enhancements, and a good bit of performance.
Sniper_Kyle 0 Posted July 23, 2004 Thx, I guess I'll keep it on
jag7313 0 Posted August 4, 2004 What are the "3D transformations and lighting calculations" mentioned here? could you provide a list? thanks. J.
redface 1 Posted August 4, 2004 what if you turn it ON manually, even though you have a GF-card from the last 3 years but OFP does not select it. Will it affect performance?
Mister Frag 0 Posted August 4, 2004 An explanation of the math behind 3D transformations is really beyond the scope of the forum, but essentially, it takes 3D coordinates in the game's virtual world, and transforms them into 2D coordinates on the monitor relative to the player's viewpoint. As you might imagine, there is alot of math involved, with millions of calculations being done every second. The lighting calculations determine how one or more light sources affect the illumination of objects. If you manually turn on HW T&L for a card / driver combination that doesn't support this feature, the game may not start, or it may fall back to the non-HW T&L rendering engine. I'm not sure which, and I can't test it on my system. Trying it will do no harm, worst case is that you'll have to change it back if it doesn't work.
redface 1 Posted August 13, 2004 ok thanks for the information
suma 8 Posted August 13, 2004 Some people translate T&L as texture and lightning, but that is fundamentally wrong. As for the maths reference, you can find more at MSDN DirectX site. There are many other resources on the net about this.
