Placebo 29 Posted March 23, 2004 Are you sure that's a good deal? No cpu Old GFX card, you ought to aim for at least a 9800 if not pro or XT, longer lifespan
Badgerboy 0 Posted March 23, 2004 ITs not exactly an old GFX card, its quite new actually. It's the budget version. I'd ditch the 9600XT though, and buy a 9800 Pro (XT is too expensive for what it is) What make is the RAM? Don't buy cheapo RAM, it works against you in the long run. Placebo 29 Posted March 23, 2004 I meant old as in weak and feeble like old people, like Ran
m21man 0 Posted March 23, 2004 I wouldn't call that a great deal, unless you have a spare CPU sitting around.
the editing man 0 Posted March 23, 2004 I think you should do it maybe a ATI RADEON 9800 pro or better you need at least a cpu otherwhise no working comp
Albert Schweitzer 10 Posted March 23, 2004 I propose you go for Dell solutions. They got the best benchmarks since months for their systems. Dont always look for the price factor. Sure it counts but dont build up this "whats the fastest I can get for this money" better compare why other larger companies why they provide not-so-fast components for the same price. Sounds confusing? Well what I actually want to say is this, you get what you pay for, you pay little for a fast system then there must be a point of weakness somewhere, better you find out before. BraTTy 0 Posted March 23, 2004 1200$ would get you a real nice computer with the biggest expense being the video card which is basically the most important part to me. Looking at this chart a 9600xt appears to perform well.Almost adequate, better than I was thinking http://www.tomshardware.com/graphic/20031229/vga-charts-04.html
drewb99 0 Posted March 24, 2004 Me says get an Athlon XP Mobile 2400+.
shinRaiden 0 Posted March 24, 2004 Having done field service for my previous employer for a certain large uber-OEM mentioned previously, you really should get the 3year complete-care warranty. Touching anything, changing it to anything other than "as-is", your results are dubious. That is, if you can figure out how to get the blasted things open. 'Lots' of things are warranty service, IF you know what they are. If you don't know how to DIY, buy from a local reputable DIY shop. That way, your system is repairable. BTW, more and more OEM's are putting the windows distribution on a hidden partition, and not giving you the cd's. Guess what happens if your hardrive goes south? IF it's covered under warranty, expect up to a week before a new drive comes, and it will be blank without that hidden partition unless it's within the first 3 days. So you'll need the CD's, which if you can pry them out of their cold dead hands will cost you ~$30, plus S&H, and take 6~8 weeks.
