walker 0 Posted March 17, 2004 Hi Winters Stop your panic Henny Penny The email addresses are spoofed (faked) to apear that they came from codemasters they did not. The virus has infected someone who has your email address and a codemasters one or a list of websites visited from the history folder of their machine. The virus then makes up addresses to apear real. It is a process called social engineering. The writer tries to work out what will make you think the virused email is from a real person and open it. Same sort of thing the love bug virus did a couple of years back. Another version makes up email addresses of a fictional management of your root mail address if it discovers two people have the same root mail address. So if your zonk@ zonkoids.com and the infected person is zonksmate@ zonkoids.com you get an email from management@ zonkoids.com Ditto if your both subscribed to the same mailing list. Your virus checker protected you problem solved. Kind Regards Walker
SpongeBob 0 Posted March 17, 2004 I got one last week from my ISP It had the subject "Email account problems" Said that my email account is having "problems", and for me to open up a "readme" attachment for more "instructions". The last line of the email had "Have a nice day." In the 4+ years I have been with this ISP, they never told me to "have a nice day" so I knew something was up. Placebo 29 Posted March 17, 2004 First I've edited the thread title because of the unfair impression it gives to anyone who doesn't know that the virus spoofs Email addresses. Second this virus has been discussed here. Thus this thread can be closed
