The issue of religion is inextricably bound up in the middle east; in theocracies like Iran, as well as most other countries whose laws are based on religion (which is not a good thing (and which doesn't mean religion came up with laws originally.)) You can't simply tell them 'they are reading their book wrong' - they think YOU are reading it wrongly, and they can back up their assertions with scripture, which, if you think scripture has any worth, is as valid as your interpretation.
