Us presidential election 2004

Quote[/b] ]Furthermore, the media is not nearly as good as it ought to be. TV news is an embarrassment to journalism. Today only elements of the print media still have some quality (NYT, WSJ, WP...). The rest is just crap - copying sound-bites from official press releases.

Hey, we actually kinda agree on something here... how is that possible... crazy_o.gif

The groupthink though is starting to impact the fishwraps though. Looking at the regional paper, far too many stories are just copied and pasted verbatim from AP, rather than from other interesting sources.

That's what I like about the OT forum here, 30sec's after anything happens worldwide we have posts from AP, Reuters, Skynet, Pravda, Xinhua, Crawford Oil Trader, Boston Yachting Magazine, and commented on by hordes of us denizens who may or may not actually have credibility to be real pundits. tounge_o.gif

...this is an interesting article by a quadraplegic on John Edwards' claim that people in wheelchairs will be cured if Kerry is elected. http://www.time.com/time....00.html

The article doesn't even mention Edwards. rock.gif

But even if Edwards hopefulness was overstated, would you prefer the genuine guarantee of hopelessness offered by Bush over the possibility for something better from Kerry?

Just remeber guys that the reason the rich get the most largest tax breaks is because they pay the most taxes. If you don't pay taxes you aren't going to get a tax break. But if you don't pay taxes in the first place what do you care if the guy who does gets a break?

This is the IRS' breakdown of who paid taxes in 2001. You'll see that the top 50% paid 96% of the taxes, leaving the bottom 50% of wage earners paying 4% of taxes.

Given the high level of people below the poverty line in the US, it's hardly surprising. You have a very big gap between poor and rich.

Quote[/b] ]This is what is known as a progressive tax system.

No, a progressive tax system is where the percentage is raised relative the income.

Quote[/b] ]

Also keep in mind that no country has ever taxed itself to prosperity.

That's debatable. If we take Sweden for example - far higher taxes, but lower unemployment and higher growth. (There's plenty of wrong with the Swedish tax system though, but I won't get into that here).

Quote[/b] ]Changing gears a bit, this is an interesting article by a quadraplegic on John Edwards' claim that people in wheelchairs will be cured if Kerry is elected. http://www.time.com/time....00.html

I'm glad you posted that. Just talked to a friend yesteday - that suffers from MS (fortunately a milder non-progressive type). We talked a bit about stem cells and he told me of a breakthrough that they had at Karolinska, here in Stockholm.

A woman who was suffering from a really nasty progressive form of MS and got well after an experimental stem cell treatment - as far as they can tell for now, she's fully cured.

Within a year of the first symptoms, she had lost the ability to walk, see and finally to talk and she did not have a long time left to live. So they nuked her immune system with chemotherapy (not pleasent) and started treating her with GM stem cells. Within two weeks after the first treatment she started feeling her legs again and today she's completely restored to the point where she was before the first symptoms.

Medical breaktrhoughs can happen really fast. Lots of money is being dumped into biomedical research. There are lots of encouragning results (like the one above). So it's not beyond reason that biotech currently in development can be ready to use soon enough for people that are alive today to use. The wide practical usage of it isn't necessarily in a remote future.

Conventional wisdom says that no US president has lost three debates and been re-elected.

Check Yahoo!

They've had a live feed so far of each debate.

EDIT: GOD DAMN IT.

Already starting with the same bullshit...container ships, xrays, and various bullshit.

Be a good headline...

But when she dies she's going straight to hell.  Just ask billybob, m21man, sputnik_munroe, ogre_h, and all the other Bush fan boys who values all innocent human life - unless of course they are innocent Iraqi humans.

Seriously, denoir, I have 2 friends suffering from MS.  One had just completed her specialisation to become a neural surgeon when she became afflicted.  Thanks for posting the good news.  I look forward to showing it to her tomorrow.

Bush is REALLY pushing the liberal thing...

Did he just launch a personal attack on Kerry, without answering his rebuttal?

OH! Smooth reply by Kerry!

Are you watching it on TV? Cos on the BBC webstream, Kerry just started his rebuttal against Bush's marriage rant...seems like there's a delay?

Might be a slight web delay. I'm watching it on CBS.

Kerry's reply was a lot smoother, the "We are all God's children" and "Ask Dick Cheney whos daughter is a lesbian".

Didn't know Kerry is Catholic smile_o.gif

The Church denied Kerry communion because of his abortion stance.

What the hell is that jackass laughing about?

Inflation = macro-economics. Even a computing student like me knows that.
