Computer troubles

Recommended Posts

My optical usb mouse has been cutting out intermittently these past few days. It has obviously been extremely frustrating, and I just assumed it was time to replace it, but then some other things happened that made me assume the problem is somewhere else. Maybe someone here can help?

1: Whenever the mouse cuts out, windows makes the "USB device unplugged sound" (like a charming bloop, and then a few seconds later, the "new USB device sound" and mouse control is returned. Unplugging and repluggin in the mouse seems to fix these jams as well.

2: Today, my keyboard and mouse stopped responding altogether, and they worked fine on my friends computer. I tried every combination of USB ports to plug them into, and they still bloop in and out rather frequently...

3: At this point, my mouse spends %50 of its time slowly moving across the screen at about half its speed, %25 of its time just not working (optical light is off) and %25 working fine.

My specs:

Win XP

Dell Dimension 8100

p4 1.5 512mb ram

160gb HD

In my USB ports I have a mouse, keyboard, and joystick.

any help would be appreciated

If the batteries are good, try this:

Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager -> Universal Serial Bus Controllers

Check to make sure that all of the Host Controllers present in your systems have available bandwidth for USB transfers (accessible in the Advanced tab), and that all of the hub have available power (in the Power tab).

If the devices attached to the USB ports or hub draw more current than what is available om the bus, or if the bandwidth requirements aren't met, some devices may stop functioning properly.

Mister Frag is back! smile_o.gif

I'll try to drop by more often. My dad is going through the last stages of Altzheimer's, and it's been eating into my time and stressing me out. Oh, and then there's work, too... sad_o.gif

Apparently there are programs which you install that might harm your settings. Did you install something recently?

But that keyboard AND mouse sometimes do nonesense makes me believe you got a hardwareproblem!   sad_o.gif

Placebo, words are beautiful, use them! "Welcome Back"!  tounge_o.gif

(ps. I can see my windows mouse pointer in Operation Flashpoint, very disturbing!)

err, im at the USB seciton of the control panel, but where do I go from here?

I see:

1: generic USB hub

2: Intel 8280 1BA/BAM USB universal host controller - 2442 (%20 system resources)

3: Intel 8280 1BA/BAM USB universal host controller - 2444 (%10 system resources)

4: USB composite Device

5: USB root hub

6: USB root hub

I have 3 USB devices right now. Keyboard, mouse, joystick. The keyboard is in USB port 1, mouse port 2, and joystick into a port on the keyboard...

One hub (im assuming my keyboard) takes 50 mA, with 80 mA going to the joystick...

The other is empty...

My optical usb mouse has been cutting out intermittently these past few days.

Is this a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer? The silver & grey one with 5 buttons? There is a problem with the cable connection on the earlier versions. I had one of those, it would cut out and you had to move the capable around to get it to start up again. Sometimes you had to unplug it and plug it back in.

There was no way to fix it except get a newer version where they fixed the connection. If you bought it recently, M$ might give you a replacement.

It isn't the 5 button, but it is a basic - as I am typing this sentence the little bugger is turning on and off - mouse model. I notice the red light that comes from the mouse seems to signify it is getting power or the connection is good... If I can only find the stupid warranty info...
