The need for improved manpads

Recommended Posts

Yet to see materials about 100% launch detection, this things are pretty hard to do. That's what I find unrealistics about simulated countermeasures, they are far too effective.

1) Heat seeking missile won't be detected 100% of the time at launch

2) If the distance is too short, the flare will be ineffective (perceived speed of the flare is too high for the seeker)

3) Modern heat seekers have way to get past the flare and keep locked on the real target. In fact, many flares are launched for having a reasonable chance to fool the seeker.

So there are basically 2 things a bit overdone, it is the detection working 100% of the time, and the effectiveness of the flare itself (once launched).

This, plus the fact that there is no proximity fuze on AA missiles, makes countermeasures way too efficients.
