Blink Dog 0 Posted November 1, 2003 Just stick to .zip files, it is easier and doesn't leave stuff all over your harddrive.
NZXSHADOWS 0 Posted November 1, 2003 All I can say is that they really suck.Specially when they dont work.
SGTKOPP 0 Posted November 1, 2003 i like the idea of using both installers and then regular zips im computer stupid and can still use an installer i just change the file destination so i dont have to go look for it
Platoon Ablaze 0 Posted November 1, 2003 Well I agree AAE just spread folders with the PBOs inside them into OFP, so each time I have to manually displace PBOs, and remove the useless folders. So the advantage that AAE should give, totally miss the target, I can imagine the "newbie" looking deseperatly for his new addon in game, while the addon itself stay quiet in its own pretty folder. The fashion of RAR files boring me a lot too, since it does the same trick, extracting folders with PBOs inside, and not putting PBOs directly into the Addons folder of OFP. I agree that for large files, including several addons, like mods, the RAR format is ok, but for GOD's sake don't use RAR format for small files eg: 10mb to 20mb. As always the good old ZIP is the best, and one prog that everybody knows and use, as for the beginners too, just read the Readme, that's the way. Conclusion RAR format is excelent for its compression rate, but not useful as the ZIP, plus newcomers will hesitate to download your addon, no matters how nice it is. fallchild 0 Posted November 1, 2003 I think installers are a real pain when you use mod folders, you have to go searching around for the pbos, and often you don't know what the filenames are. I think that addons should be distributed as RARs cos they've got great compression, and they don't have to put in their own folders, they are very flexible. Besides it's often better if there are folders in the archive cos it can split up the addons from missions, etc.
r1c0cH3T 0 Posted November 1, 2003 Go: HERE IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS 95, 98, ME HERE IF YOU HAVE WINDOWS NT, 2000 XP already has the MSI installer installed. If have 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 click on the link that applys to you. Download the file on the bottom of the page and install... That should do the trick. theavonlady 2 Posted November 1, 2003 I prefer plain zips or rars but I can live with an unofficial addon installer on two conditions: 1. That it doesn't touch the Windows Registry 2. That it lets me install the contents to any directory I choose. IMO, the problem with AAE is mainly that it does not support mod folders. In theory, if everything cames packaged in AAEs and people ran them as is, we'd be seeing many more out of memory complaints from OFP players.
Stag 0 Posted November 2, 2003 Quote[/b] ]Will aae.msi or installers kill ofp? No, but they won't do much for the mod which insists on using them. Superb use of hyperbole. Have you ever considered a career in tabloid "journalism"?
CanadianTerror 0 Posted November 2, 2003 I have so much left over junk all over my HD because of installers. Next time, I'll wait for a newsite to have the addon in zip form and leave the installers for the eager beavers.
bonko the sane 2 Posted November 2, 2003 yup, installers that u can choose where u wanna install them arent that bad, apart from the fact that afterwards u need to manually uninstall from add/remove programs
WarfareGames.com 0 Posted November 2, 2003 I prefer zipped pbo's, but these installers worked fine for me on win2k SP4
ozanzac 0 Posted November 2, 2003 None of the above really suits my attitude to installers. I'll download the installer, install the files not to the flashpoint directory but a new directory, look at all the files and readmes to determine what is necessary and what is not, and cut those files to the addon/mod/mission folder of my choice and delete all unnecessary files, knowing that nothing malicous is installed where I don't want it. Please, we've lasted his long on zip's, ace's and rar's, why stop now? We were all newbies once, yet we all learned.
