zayfod 1 Posted October 23, 2003 After a fair amount of research and good data from Toadlife and other sources--good onya mate--Ive made a nice function that checks if AI are under fire or if they think they might be under threat of being fired upon. It works so well that it opens many doors for scripters. It doesnt use any eventhandlers or nearestobject but it does use getdir. And only works for infantry. Guess the next qustion? Yup. If we can PLZ o PLZ BIS have a GETturretdir command then all will be set for a truly new and exciting gaming experience. I cannot emphasise how important this command is, were we to have it. It would finally enable AI scripters to truly know where they ARE in the (split second field of AI combat)--where important decisions such as--"is that tank actually aiming at me?" can be answered. I know this has been asked b4 but now that I see BIS has made an effort to support the game into the next year via patches--awaiting OPFLASH2-- I think that this should be one of the Top command priorities. With this command we could get sum seriously dynamic AI reaction to threats happening. Espesh with all the new animations coming out. Guys this would truly open doors believe me. Maruk, Suma, anyone plz reply Zay
toadlife 3 Posted October 23, 2003 Yes, Yes, yes, I've been wishing for this command since August of 2001. It should return the direction a unit is looking though if the unit is a footsoldier. So, (Ill call it 'getdir2') getdir2 gunner tank1 - would return the direction of the turret, but if the units is on foot getdir2 unit would return the direction he was looking. This command truly *would* have opened many doors for scripting.
zayfod 1 Posted October 23, 2003 It should return the direction a unit is looking though if the unit is a footsoldier. Agreed Toadlife however, if getting the direction a unit is looking is too difficult for BIS I would be MORE THAN HAPPY with simply obtaining turret direction. Gettin the direction a unit is looking would be icing on the cake. Softly softly catchy monkey. Zay. PS Toadlife ty for your magic knowsabout numbers--they have made my function (for infantry only) simple and complete.
suma 8 Posted October 23, 2003 Quote[/b] ]BIS has made an effort to support the game into the next year via patches "Give him a finger, and he will take a whole hand." The patches we provide are targeted to fix the critical technical problems and to ensure compatibility, not to further enhance gameplay.
Sgt_Wilson 0 Posted October 23, 2003 Knowing some of the hidden calculations would be handy when it comes to the knowsabout value and other things in OFP. While I'm sure these are some of the things that go to make OFP an outstanding game, any insight would help. All of the above can probably be determined using knowsabout alone, if you know how OFP does some if its calculations. But at the end of the day, any enhancements to scripting in OFP2 will be enough for me
toadlife 3 Posted October 23, 2003 @Sgt_Wilson Check out the comments in the OFPEC online command reference. This is helpfull when writing AI scripts that use knowsabout.... http://www.ofpec.com/editors/comref.php?letter=K
toadlife 3 Posted October 23, 2003 The patches we provide are targeted to fix the critical technical problems and to ensure compatibility, not to further enhance gameplay. As much as I would LOVE this and more commands for OFP1, the game is 2.5 years old, and BIS continuing to support OFP after all this time is somthing that I've never seen with any other game developer. I'd rather them work on OFP2, then create new commands for OFP1, which would create more bugs, which would take more of their time away from OFP2.

I think i see a game more longer supported by developers than BIS for OFP only once. The first time i heard about the game Steel Panthers World at War (very good -and free- WW2 wargame built on the Steel Panther 3 engine) , it was in year 2000 and it was version 3.0 if i remember well. Today , this game is always supported by patches from MatrixGames (wargames developers) and is at version 7.1 , and "soon" 7.2 (or 8.0 instead as i read in "rumours" ) . I have no idea of the date when the version 1.0 was released but i imagine that it was before 2000 . That is an incredible long support ;) Now , back to the OFP world , i hope to see more control on the AI available in the mission editor or with scripts with OFP2 . That could be very interesting to help a possible story you are trying to relate in your mission
