Emergency services prepare for 'chemical attack' on Tube

Hundreds of police and emergency services personnel are set to respond to a simulated terrorist strike on London.

The exercise will involve a make-believe chemical attack on a Tube train at Bank station in central London.

Scores of "casualties" will be decontaminated in the streets of the Square Mile, the capital's financial district.

The scenario - designed to be as realistic as possible - closely parallels 1995's sarin gas attack on the Tokyo underground by the Aum Shrinrikyo religious cult, which killed 12 people and debilitated thousands more.

It will be the first time such a large-scale exercise has taken place in the city post-September 11 and the first time the Government's new mass decontamination units will be seen in public.

Minister for London Nick Raynsford said: "London has faced many challenges and threats in the 2,000 years of its history, not least in the last 30 years. We have had to be prepared for all new threats that emerge."

The power failure which crippled London's rush-hour traffic 10 days ago showed "there are always new lessons to be learned", he added.

Officials have stressed that today's exercise was not in response to a specific threat and that no real chemical agents would be released on the Waterloo and City line train.

The simulation involves passengers on a train from Waterloo station to Bank station being overcome by an unknown chemical. The Tube driver will report the incident to the London Underground control room and the train will stop in the tunnel just before the platform at Bank, where the line is 120 metres below ground.

The emergency services will then be required to reach the "casualties", evacuate them to street level and decontaminate them in special shower tents. The incident will involve about 500 police, fire, ambulance and London Underground personnel, and a cordon will be thrown around a number of streets.

The emergency services does training things like this quite a lot; a lot of my mates have been 'casualties at a plane crash' at the local airport, so the ambulance and fire services can practice.
