Bbc - total war

Recommended Posts

Did anyone watch BBC2 at 20:00 tonight?

They had a programme on, pitting 4 people (2 generals and two lieutenants) against an AI utilising the new Rome : Total War engine. The scenario was Hannibal (Humans) facing off against the AI (Romans). Players had 15 mins to plan their battle, and then the generals issued orders to their lieutenants, who would get two operators to move the units. The battle would then be displayed on a huge screen in the room, with the generals issuing orders based on observation. Good communication is vital! It worked quite well, and was very enjoyable.

Three observations

1 : AI needs to be knocked up a notch. (I could have smashed the puny human players with the Roman force)

2: Next time, get players who know what the units are. ( 'Move the horsy unit to those sword guys doesn't cut it'. The two generals seemed to know their stuff though)

3 : Don't fuck with elephants. Watching 5 of the bastards plough through an entire Roman formation was horrifying. (But it did look cool! )

It certainly has potential (The programme) , and I can't wait for the game!

Tell me thats not impressive...

Sweet! Almost makes me want to pick this game up and give it a shot. I've never played any of the TW series by the way.

I really like the Total War series. I have Shogun and Mideval and they're both great games, but I really like strategy games so someone who just prefers RTS or FPS may not like them.

Did it show any of the strategic portion of the game? That was allways the weakest link in the TW games.

There is a turn-based strategic level where you invade provinces and stuff, and when you invade, you go to the RTS battle scene (like you see in Badgerboy's pics) that is a lot of fun. But I prefer the turn based strategic game. smile_o.gif

Its proper RTS.

Each unit is selectable from cavalry to infantry. You can set formations and behaviour, and manouver them around the battle field.

Think C&C, but with loads more men and tactics. I have pulled off some stunning victories using the right type of unit. (Heavy cavalry and longbow men rock! )

If you dislike the turn based part of the game, you can just get stuck in to the 3d RTS part of the game. All the screenshots you see are from the game engine, and are fully interactive.

Here's a link to a demo of Medieval : Total War. Graphics are not as good as this new one, but its still great fun.

And check it out! A Napoleonic mod for Medieval : Total War! My red coats will hammer those French dogs into the ground. (there is a link to it on the official site in the downloads section. Look for 'unofficial mods'

Kinda like Braveheat? You could go into the towns you owned virutally to see whet it looks like or sneak into a enemy town to burn buildings, kill villagers or steal money. tounge_o.gif
