USMC Sniper 0 Posted September 1, 2003 One of my computers is really screwed up, so I'm going to format it. I have a question though, how do I format in XP and then install XP from DOS? I used to do it by installing ME from DOS and then installing XP over it, but I can't find my ME disk.
Cloney 0 Posted September 1, 2003 Boot from the XP disk.
smogmorph 0 Posted September 1, 2003 Boot from the XP disk. This is for both format and installation?
Dewey61 0 Posted September 1, 2003 Yah when u boot from the XP disk you get a option to like reinstall XP. And in that process it will format before reinstalling.
USMC Sniper 0 Posted September 1, 2003 How do you boot from the disk, can someone elaborate that?
Cloney 0 Posted September 1, 2003 1) Turn off Your Computer 2) Place XP CD in CD-ROM Drive 3) Turn on Computer 4) Windows installation DOS menu should pop up. It's pretty straightforward from their on in.
Gollum1 0 Posted September 1, 2003 If you can´t boot from the CD, you can find the 1.44" boot disc files from the Microsoft homepage.
iNeo 0 Posted September 1, 2003 So if you only have the XP upgrade, not full install, you can reinstall with format without installing Me first?
Cloney 0 Posted September 1, 2003 You can reinstall with the upgrade, it will just ask you to place your ME disk in the drive at some point during the installation process to make sure you had a previous version of Windows.
Badgerboy 0 Posted September 1, 2003 DOS is long gone on NT systems. I take it you upgraded ME to XP before? If you did, a fresh install of XP will run like a dream in comparison. ME was the worst piece of software Microsoft ever published, yet people are STILL using it! What the hells the matter with them? Any ME installation I come across is destroyed and replaced, even if it requires using an hour of my personal time to do it.

Oh that will at least speed up the process a bit although I'll have to keep the ME cd ( unless..... )

Nah I did the upgrade, wiped it out and did a fresh install and just used the ME disc to verify. I agree though ME is terrible.

Well before you do all that you have to change your primary boot device in the BIOS (from HDD to CD-ROM)
Cloney 0 Posted September 1, 2003 I never had to do that... strange.
Gollum1 0 Posted September 1, 2003 I´ve never tried ME but I´ve heard a looot of people saying that it´s really bad and bug-ridden. What EXACTLY is the problem with ME? What are the major bugs? Haven´t they been fixed in a service pack or something?
SKULLS_Viper 0 Posted September 1, 2003 I had Me, and it 90% of the time, crashed.
Cloney 0 Posted September 1, 2003 Yup, BSODs in OFP weren't uncommon, sometimes i thought they were scripted into the missions.
Badgerboy 0 Posted September 1, 2003 They basically took Win98SE, slowed it down, added a sprinkling of BSOD's, filled it full of useless media crap which you will never use, and programmed it to fall over whenever you installed more than two programs. Plus the fact that it chewed up your drivers and denied that some of your hardware actually existed. (If you don't want to go the XP/2K route, then stick with 98SE. It may be older, but its a hell of alot more stable)
