Modeling with SketchUp or other 3D CAD programs.... how do I ...

Recommended Posts

So everything is out of date, or dead links or images missing etc.

It all looks like a cluster F. But hey... squeak squeak.

I'm really into drawing in CAD software NOT modelling software. Ie. I draw most things by hand and only extrude things when

it's obviously easy. Working with primitives etc is just not the way I draw.

So bearing this in mind, how would I get a drawing out of SketchUp 2016 and into Arma 2 OA?

At the moment a super basic object would be great.

Tried searching YourTube for videos and all I kept getting were vids for mission editing... thanks youtueb...

Even file names are a mystery... what is a .P3D file and I don't care about Prepare3D... eye roll...

What makes a .p3d file? It's mystifying that there is not a proper decent manual for all of this.

( I mean a DEV made one... yeah yeah I know "search for it".... moar eye roll...)

Help.

Hi Ghost are we the only ones left?

Would love to draw in SketchUp 2016, export a file, maybe do something to it in BI tools then import into Arma to check it.

Is this so hard to do ?

THANK YOU ! !!!

George.

There are still people with ArmA2, but they still make mods, I don't know how many there are, I still make them, although I'm not publishing any, it turns out that it's full of thieves, now it seems that the DMCA doesn't exist, for example the A3 Steam Workshop is full of unauthorized mods and there's no way to get them removed, you report them and nothing happens, the same thing happens with moddb, well I think I got off track.

@opusfmspol already gave you one of the links that you want so much, one of the step-by-step tutorials, but it seems that you didn't pay much attention to it because you saw it without images, so... it seems that because you don't like searching, you don't know what to do with the links...

So look at this...
http://web.archive.org/web/20110913181455/https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Mondkalb's_Addon_Tutorial

There you have your step-by-step with images, wait a bit, sometimes it takes a while to load all the images.

And as I told you in another post, even if you don't like it, but it is like that, in the forum there are more tutorials, you just have to search... "yes, search" there is nothing organized, because it is a forum where over the years everything has been published and there is a lot of information that is not organized as you would like, where you have more order is in the official wiki, there you also have a lot of information that you need to learn.

Those video tutorials that @opusfmspol sent you, the gnat videos you should also watch, they will be useful to you.

There is a lot of information that is not learning step-by-step tutorials, they are things that you must learn separately, yes at some point they are all related but there is no step-by-step tutorial that is worth it because it simply cannot be done.

you want to learn about extensions, what they are, what they are for, etc.

https://community.bistudio.com/wiki/Category:BIS_File_Formats

learn all that.

As I said, you have a lot of things to learn, nothing is quick or easy, the world of ArmA is quite extensive, in terms of editing and so on.

With cad files you can't do anything, you have to export to 3ds or obj, preferably 3ds.

Cheers

So if I can export a 3DS file out of sketchup and get it into O2 them I am doing good ?  I'm gonna live ? Yes? Please?

"unauthorized mods " ??? what is this of which you speak? Stolen stuff reposted ? That sounds bad.

I'm gunning for .3ds files coming out of SketchUp and then being "magiced" by o2 into something cool.

Sure there is a lot to learn but I am rilly rilly just intrested in the super duper barest minimum right now to

say YEY I can do it.  I did it with RC DP.... very very easy compared to Arma... Draw in Sketch up, export .X file. import into

the "editor", edit, save as file, and then it's right there in game to use. So straight forward. Davy loots is pretty smart guy...

Uh, ok. I read read and watch.  02 looks, uh, quite awful  BUT I am sure people have done great things with it.

( I love SketchUp 2016 ... it's my goto drawing program. I draw widgets...)

ok I shut up now. Back with some pics sometime. Just you wait, I show you something... one day.

George.

Well DARN !

I did a thing!   Drew a box in SketchUp, exported it as a .3DS file, imported it into 02 and there it is: a wire frame box.

little steps!

By unauthorized I mean exactly stolen mods, since they use your mod without your permission, modify it and publish it as if they had created it, it has become a very common practice unfortunately.

On the other hand, to have something inside the game, the easiest way to do that is to make a static object, like a box for example, but even then it is not as easy as creating a model, importing and exporting, etc. You also need to create a configuration file, etc., and that is why I told you that you have to learn many things, it is not just about making models, importing and exporting, it is more complex than that.

Okay, now you are seeing the basis of working with models, now you need the textures, materials, etc., and the config file.
Keep working!👍
