Addon servers

Recommended Posts

Known issue: if you don't have Resistance installed it 'will' crash. Hopefully fixed in the next update. It can also crash if you never let it scan the files fully the first time.

These issues are now fixed with version 0.95f.

great work so far!

just one thing, at the moment the prog uses the reg-key to locate the ofp installation, but there are people having ofp installed twice - one clean league version and one addon version - so plz add the function to set the standard ofp folder by the user himself

regards

Good point.

I have a quick fix for you. Temporarily rename the ofp folder pointed out by the registry. Start OFP Watch, now it's going to be confused and it will ask you where the folder is. Select your other OFP folder and let watch start. Last rename your first ofp folder back to its original name.

Added the option to set the path, included in version 0.96.

Also added automatic upgrade (download and install) so you people participating in the the Auto-Addon test phase won't have to download, unzip and copy files each time I upload a new version. Now you just have to click the flashing 'upgrade' button and a few seconds later click ok for restart of the program. Well, you still have to do this last manual install smile_o.gif

I would reccomend that we all use mod folders and keep our original addons folders clean so that we can still use file check in some circumstances. If each server has its owns mod folder u may have duplicate addons but it should only use the ones in that folder. I am going to set shortcuts up this way but if the same thing can be done with ofpwatch than i will use that.

You may move any files installed to mod folders of your choice. Just restart OFP Watch and it should find the files at the new locations. If you connect to an Auto-Addon server it will also set the mod switches for you unless you specified them yourself as parameters.

I might add a button to move or copy entire packages to mod folders later. Also make the auto-mod-switch-detection smarter for people using mods like you do.

There are just as many ways to install addons as there are people installing addons. I realized it's impossible to please everyone. 4 out of 5 people install in the addon folder unless they install larger mods like FDF or I44.

The first prio for auto-addon is downloading of addons, the second prio is taking care of some of the addon problems there are. Putting everything in mod folders like you do is probably the safest still.

Auto-Addon takes duplicated files into account even if everything is stacked into addons/. However, it will only work when connecting to an auto-addon server. It will never overwrite a file when installing. It will disable an existing file before writing the new one. In this way you can always revert to an older version of the addon. In fact, that will be done automatically if you connect to an auto-addon server that requests an older addon than the currently active one.

Use the auto-addon manager to disable unnecessary addons in the addon folder. It also got a system of protecting <core files> like the original addons. These can never be uninstalled by mistake unless you delete them from windows explorer.

Phew, reminds me of all he documentation I must write.

My suggestion is more for admins of servers and for people who make addons available for download. If we keep our regular addons folders clean it will resolve many file check problems.

Does the tool take into account addons which the server does NOT need but you want to start nonetheless, eg clientside addons like dynamic range, hisky, etc? I only play on one server which is a linux server so i can't really test this tool (well, sometimes i play on 2 other servers, but those are linux servers too)... I will download the client anyway and try what i can do with that, maybe i still get some ideas for improvement wink_o.gif

You should be able to run these as usual.

In the case of hisky, you can set it up with the auto-addon manager so you switch it on and off by activating and deactivating packages without using mod folders. Just played around with it myself.

A bit advanced but fully working.

First, locate Res/Dta/Data.pbo, Res/Dta/Data3D.pbo, Res/dta/Hwtl/Data.pbo and Res/dta/Hwtl/Data3D.pbo in the advanced view (core files). These 4 files are the files hisky would overwrite if you just copied it on top of the original sky. Select all 4 of them, right click and select bind to new package. Name it 'Original sky'. Go to the package view and disable Original sky. Close OFP Watch and copy Kegetys hisky dta-folder over res/dta. Start OFP Watch (let it scan the new files), go to the advanced view and locate the 4 files again (note, the active files green icon, not the original inactive files), select them, right click and bind to new package. Name the package 'Hisky'.

Now you can easily enable or disable Hisky or the Original sky from the package view without using mods.

The easiest way to completely get rid of Hisky is to disable the package, go to res/dta and delete the 4 deactivated Hisky files. Their file names looks something like "data.pbo.a4876098.aab". Finally you just right click and dissolve the two packages from the package view.

Are people actually overwriting thier original data files?

Is it possible that say if i am checking res/dta/data.pbo with file check on the server, and that my local file has not been modified in any way and i get a modified message, that some addon in another folder is modifying and cacheing the data.pbo?

Does anyone have any clue why addons cause false data messages. I know the BAS ones do for me.

Quote[/b] ]Are people actually overwriting thier original data files?

Imagine something stupid and far fetched that's possible to do. Also count in far fetched mistakes and missunderstandings. Then realize there are people actually doing it.

I've had to take the above formula into account several times when working on Auto-Addon. biggrin_o.gif

I KNOW of several people doing it, they backup their original files and overwrite them. Not everyone uses modfolders, but more and more ppl do. I know of only one guy who uses some kind of addon manager.

That only creates a problem when more and more servers are using file check to check the originals.

Or if we come up with some kind of anticheat system it seems that will make things very difficult.

Planning to have SHoP 209.163.146.37 as a part time addon server that will have a fairly small pack set up like jocko's or through ofpwatch addon manager.

The idea here will be to have c&h missions and mid size ctfs using a good set of addons. i will post when it is set up.

right now shop does not require addons.

I have started working on the linux server and I've had no bad bugs for days. I think Auto-Addon could go public.

There are still documentation missing and there are always room for improvements but that doesn't have to be added right away.

excellent news...I look forward to it! I have had the 'Auto Addons' server portion running in windows and it works really well! I hope that plenty of servers adopt this system!

An Auto-Addon Linux server is available for download. Current version is 1.21

It's almost identical to the windows server so I just included the same readme files.

Run it in the foreground by just typing ./autoaddonserver or in the background with the nohup command. I'm so lousy at linux administration someone else is better at explaining how to run nohup. Basicly it installs the same way as the OFP game server.
