crassus 0 Posted July 5, 2003 Folks, I just recently started using WinXp (after putting it on the game rig I built myself), but I am getting those annoying Messenger Service pop-ups! How on earth do I get rid of/disable it. Every book and magazine I glance through does not address this at all. Please help. This is very frustrating, esp. when playing OFP MP. Thanks in advance. SgtBarnes 0 Posted July 5, 2003 Annoying, aren`t they? Try this.... http://www.lantalk.net/disable_messenger.php
Warin 0 Posted July 5, 2003 Right click on the 'My Computer' icon on the desktop. Select 'Manage' Double Click 'Services and Applications' in the left window. Double Click 'Services' in the right Window Scroll down to and double click 'Messenger' In the window that pops up, click the 'stop' radio button. Then change 'Startup Type' to disabled. No more pop ups
crassus 0 Posted July 6, 2003 Thanks a lot, folks. I was seriously ready to go back to Win98 or wait for XPlite to come out. Thanks!
FallenPaladin 0 Posted July 6, 2003 Another thing you should do is run Ad-Aware. When you run this software for the first time on Windows XP you can disable the (W)intedgated spysoftware from Microsoft.
Renagade 0 Posted July 6, 2003 Windows should come with a full indeph manual like the linux packages u buy.
hellfish6 7 Posted July 6, 2003 You have to go to the bookstore and pay $30-$75 for the manual seperately. It's kinda the same with computer games - you have to pay extra money to get the manual (err... "strategy guide") that should have come with the game in the first place! Renagade 0 Posted July 6, 2003 Most games come with reasnoble leaflets to explain everything. One of my annoyances are games using quake 1,2and3,Hl UT&UT2k3 engines should come with documentation for all the console commands.

Hit_Sqd_Maximus 0 Posted July 7, 2003 This isnt worth making a new thread about... so I thought I could post it here? Anyways, about every 3 seconds my mouse just freezes for about 1/8th of a second and my hard drive light blinks. I am on XP. Does anyone have any clue why it would do this? ralphwiggum 6 Posted July 7, 2003 M$ = Marginaly $uitable my guess is that there is some sort of running process that accesses HD on timed basis. I heard something about file back up or something like that but not sure.
Hit_Sqd_Maximus 0 Posted July 7, 2003 Thats what it was, system restore was set on 20 gigs.... I turned it down to 600 megabites and it seems to be running better now.

Good lord. 20 gigs of system backup files. LOL System restore is a nice idea, but for the most part it's a system resource hog.
