Major Gripe 0 Posted June 3, 2003 ........No a plane with a battering ram    Perfect for those stubborn defenders holed up in a house. Just call this up and knock down the walls, no more resistance!!
Koolkid101 0 Posted June 4, 2003 When did they use that beast?
Apollo 0 Posted June 4, 2003 Ok ,seriously ,i "suppose" that is actually not meant as a Battering ram. So eh ,care to give us some real info about the use of this plane?
blackdog~ 0 Posted June 4, 2003 That is an OV-1 Mohawk - not sure what that attachment is, looks to be some kind of nerve gas canister of some sort (although usually the US wouldn't be conducting such operations) Ok I have checked a few websites and it might be an OV-1B or OV-1C because these are supposed to include photographic and infrared equipment. This might have been standard on all Mohawk's though, because it was an SLAR (Side Looking Aircraft Radar). The other pictures I have seen look to be demilitarized/civillian versions. I have just checked a few more sites, and what I thought was true. This was standard on all 380 OV-1's introduced into the Army during the Vietnam war. FatWombat 0 Posted June 4, 2003 That is a weird lookin plane...must have extra long struts on the landing gear to be able to land with that thing attached to it So the thing hanging underneath is a radar blackdog?
killagee 0 Posted June 4, 2003 Ahhh the Mohawk, the very first Model Plane I ever made. There is a great book I read a few years ago by a Mohawk pilot in Vietnam. Cant remember his name tho... I think the book was called "A friend Up There"
blackdog~ 0 Posted June 4, 2003 The odd looking cockpit was there in order to be one of the first planes with a panoramic view of the battlefield (since this was mostly used as a support aircraft) The EA-3B Viking uses a similar design (it might be another one with the similar name). NAA_Us_Marine 0 Posted June 4, 2003 the radar doesnt only ping sideways it goes front and back also i believe.
Supah 0 Posted June 4, 2003 It looks like a JSTARS type ground monitoring Radar. My two cents

killagee 0 Posted June 4, 2003 That long contraption is an early Side Looking Radar, which could map moving ground targets (kind of), which is quite different to a Side Looking Aperture Radar, which is what JSTARS uses. Similar duties though I suppose. It was a good FAC plane apparently.
Supah 0 Posted June 4, 2003 It ground monitors (like the JSTARS radar) and its a radar (like the JSTARS one)
