FSPilot 0 Posted May 6, 2003 I don't know why people don't understand this, it should be common sense. When you insult our president, whether we voted for him or not, you insult the entire country. When you say the president is a bumbling fool, you insult the entire country. If you're not careful you're going to get a lot of knee-jerk reactions. So, unless you like insulting Americans, stop insulting the president. Now I know nobody here is going to stop making fun of the president, any type of change is too much to expect. Just remember that 71% of Americans like the president, so when you prance around calling him a bumbling fool you insult 71% of the United States, and dont be surprised when you get a hostile reaction. My guess is that most europeans stereotype you americans as too simple rather than complicated - and you are of course totally nuts  <span id='postcolor'> I think the blanket stereotype of Americans being simple is just European arrogance raising its ugly head. America or rather the United States (there are 3 Americas, North, Central and South) is a very large and diverse place. Our populace ranges from Harvard intellectuals to Arkansas hillbillies. Lumping all Americans into one set just because the NASCAR/walmart set gets more publicity is simply wrong. Americans are very patriotic people, we support our nation deeply even if we don't always support our leadership's politics fully. I personally don't mind if anyone insults our President, I didn't vote for him and I believe in free speech without exception. Go ahead and say what you want. However, insult my countrymen or miscast who we are as a people, and watch out. I can hold my own in an argument and I'm not afraid to belittle people who toss out ridiculuos/fantastic statements! Make a good argument backed by fact and I'll consider your point of view and weigh it against my personal beliefs. If it makes sense to me, I'll alter my beliefs to incorporate it. But then again, most of you guys herein offtopic already have that figured out about me . BRGNorway, it doesn't bother me that your opinions are left of center. Oligo 1 Posted May 6, 2003 The problems of U.S. are just the problems all the democracies are facing, but in a greater scale, because all the shit is amplified due to the power and size of U.S. All democracies are lead by morons. It's because most of the population of a typical democratic country are solely interested on guzzling beer, getting laid and/or producing children. This mass of people will of course elect leaders, who want to ascertain that the mass of people can continue to procreate and watch sporting events, oblivious to the world around them. If this blissfull ignorance is threatened, the moronic leaders will lash out within the limits of their power (a leader of a small country whines in U.N. while U.S. goes to war in case of an "external" threat and stupid laws are passed in case of a domestic "threat"). As a result, we have the current situation, that is: Democracy = Rule by morons.

I bet that your country is perfect, no poor people, no stupid people, everybody has an IQ of at least 250, it never rains, the sun always shines.<span id='postcolor'> He is from Finland (Turku to be precise, If I'm not mistaken) And I agree with him entirely. Democrary is the rule of the masses, the rule of the mediocrity. The postive side is that the average citizen will be pleased. The down side is that you can't expect it to perform miracles. The average person's interest is very limited and consists mostly of watching reality-shows on TV, watching football from time to time, getting laid and getting drunk. Those are all very short term interests and that's also reflected in the characteristics of a democracy. Democracy has however several big advantages. One is the blame/credit assignement that marks an important step in our political evolution. In the typical dictatorship the dictator personally takes all the credit/blame. If people are displeased he loses his head. Democracy has evolved beyond that. Now if people complain they're complaining about people that they have elected themselves - i.e the blame is mirrored. Therefor working democracies are generally stable systems. That in facto the power in a typical democracy lies in its beaurocratic layers and that the parties that people can choose between are almost identical is easily forgotten. In a democracy we trade efficiency and rapid progress for stability. And that's not a bad thing. The rapid progress often evident in dictatorships is usually nullified by the next dictator in line who takes the progress in the diametrically oposed direction. In a democracy we have a huge waste of resources for little progress but it accumulates over time, giving a positive development over a longer period. Oligo 1 Posted May 6, 2003 Tamme, incidentally it so happens that I'm also a finn and Finland is a perfect example of a democracy with leaders who are populistic morons. Finnish leaders don't whine in UN, because we have no external threat to whine about. But when it comes to passing stupid laws in order to curb internal "threats", we are a shining example of it. A typical finn is a fellow, who wants to watch ice hockey in peace and ESPECIALLY one who thinks that having kids is the greatest favour you can do to society. That's why the typical mass of finns always votes for the leaders, who are advocating the same family values garbage. That's why we have Tanja Karpela as the culture minister, who according to todays headlines, is Waging War Against Porn. Democracy = Rule of dorks.
PitViper 0 Posted May 6, 2003 I think the problem is that you believe that Government can, and is supposed to, solve all cultural problems within a country. Â I think that often, it is the culture that must solve them itself. Most of the time, government throws money at the problem and hopes it will work itself out. Tamme 0 Posted May 6, 2003 Democracy is the worst government type in the world, but the others are even worse. It's very difficult if not impossible to make a government that really works and concentrates on the right things. The family values BS is annoying me too, but it really doesn't matter who you vote, nothing changes 'cause everyone else still votes for the "family values" morons. They should really cut the culture and sport budgets and put the money in healthcare and police funding. Laws are no good if there's no one to make sure they are followed. I don't think that are leaders are stupid. They just don't have any new ideas, same crap every year. People still vote them every year because they are the safest option. Our government should be totally renewed, throw the old politicians out and don't let them back in. Then have a vote and let some new faces take control. Maybe they could make some changes.
