Animals of the battlefield

Recommended Posts

Yep, this is an effort to save the "political Iraq-thread" from monkeys and dolphins. However, the topic at hand should also provide some interest due to the fact that animals are valuable resources in most armies around the world. Most topics in this forum concentrate on politics, weaponry, special units etc. - and now the time have come for reviewing the animals role!

My first contribution is this:

Terriers recruited for hi-tech rescue role

(by the way - the one in the middle of the photograph looks like a welsh terrier - like the one I have myself)

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/2611625.stm

Could this be a solution for rescuing after future 911's?

Not only that, the U.S. Navy is now training dolphins to locate and tag mines in the waters off Irak.

I just read an article on it in MSN.com with some cool pictures.

There were quite a few SAR dogs used in the aftermath of 9/11, and the Oklahoma City bombing

The small terriers sounds like a good idea for rubble searching missions.

Dogs have contributed to the Armed Forces of many nations:

War Dogs

The link below actually names many dogs who served (some even from the American Civil War):

Memorial for some of the dogs who served the U.S. Military

</span><table border="0" align="center" width="95%" cellpadding="3" cellspacing="1"><tr><td>Quote </td></tr><tr><td id="QUOTE">Nearly 4000 dogs served in Vietnam and saved up to 10,000 American servicemen through their scouting and sentry duties. When withdrawing from Vietnam in 1973, the military classified the dogs as surplus equipment to be left behind during evacuation. Many dogs were left with South Vietnamese allies who were afraid of the dogs and didn't know how to handle them. Many of the dogs were euthanized, and many more perished at the hands of their inexperienced South Vietnamese handlers. Only a handful of Vietnam war dogs made it back to the United States. Many handlers and trainers who worked with these dogs were traumatized by having to leave their faithful companions behind, stating that the dogs saved their lives and often did more work than they did.<span id='postcolor'>

Actually, those dolphins have been trained to do that for a long time....they are actually "on the job" in IRAQ wink.gif

Not the first time they have been used either.

Thanks both of you!

By the way - could you help me with a minor problem?

I've been searching for pages with war dogs for hours (until you provided that great link madmedic) in order to find pics. The only problem is that I'm not able to use the "image-button" because it doesn't accept "copy and paste" ! Can I in one way or another do something to retrieve the pics?

Oh, Im sorry...I thought you meant you wanted to save the pic on your PC, didnt realize you wanted to post it.

It would have to be on a picture server, or a site that allows linking for you to post it.

I hate to bother you once more - but I'm really hopeless with technical things like that. I'm harly able to turn on my coffee machine. You wouldn't by any chance know where to find such a server? smile.gif

I use EZShots.com :

www.ezshots.com

You have to upload the pic from your PC to their site...then you can link to it from their server.

All you have to do is post the exact url of the pic in between the "" tags...and POW! there it is.
